    Scariest U2 Songs

Yeah, great call on the Passengers stuff. Might be an unpopular take, but I think it might well be their second-best 90s album (after the obvious one) and probably better than any of their albums that came after it. Ito Okashi is wonderful, and definitely haunting.

The Joshua Tree vs. Achtung Baby -- Which do you prefer?

Kinda disagree on both counts, actually. RHMT probably has the most memorable chorus on the album outside of the first 4 tracks, and it has an operatic sweep that I think is pretty unique to the JT. Whereas I think that the post-punky drum and (especially) bass sound on Love Comes Tumbling place...

I forgot about this one. Good call! Listening to it as a kid was my first introduction to William Blake. Simpler times...

    Scariest U2 Songs

Twilight and Exit are both great calls. The former has a strong contender for my favourite guitar break from Edge. If I was "the future", I'd be pretty frightened by Get On Your Boots giving me a big kiss.

    Scariest U2 Songs

I appreciate it when a song can really spook me, like a good horror film. U2 aren't particularly known as a "scary" band, as it's not typically what they aim for, but occasionally they do take you to those places. So I was wondering - which U2 song(s) do you all consider to be the scariest? In...

The Joshua Tree vs. Achtung Baby -- Which do you prefer?

I actually really love "Mothers of the Disappeared"...to me it sounds like a "pop" take/expansion on Brian Eno's song "In Dark Trees", from Another Green World. Which is high praise, since I think that Another Green World is a strong contender for greatest album ever made. And the intro sounds...

The Joshua Tree vs. Achtung Baby -- Which do you prefer?

The Joshua Tree, though I love both. I prefer the more "spacious" mix of JT to the more "compressed" mix of AB, and while I do think that AB's lyrics/atmosphere have a nice dark intimacy to them, I can't help but miss the grand sense of solidarity that they were so effective at on their earlier...

Pop 25th Anniversary Thread... What do you want?

Yeah! It's not on the third album, but I remember someone pointing out that Running To Stand Still has a very similar chord progression to the VU's I'm Waiting For The Man (another song about heroin addiction).

Pop 25th Anniversary Thread... What do you want?

Yeah, I like Grace. It's basically U2's take on The Velvet Underground's song Jesus, I think. It's not quite the masterpiece that the VU's song is (not a major slight, the VU's song is one of the best religious songs ever), but I like how warm and delicate it is.

Pop 25th Anniversary Thread... What do you want?

That's fair. I guess I like to imagine that it's a beat coming from someone's boombox on a street in NYC, and the sound grounds the beginning of a person's internal monologue that keeps building in intensity. The first couple minutes of that song have some of most beautiful Edge guitar tones and...

Best Parts of Live Songs That Were Later Removed...

I think it's too bad that the band never plays full-band versions of Stay (Faraway, So Close) anymore. Since Zoo TV they've only done acoustic guitar-only versions, which are pretty good, but just not the same level as something like this:

Whaddaya think of my (slightly) alternate Unforgettable Fire track-listing?

It wouldn't be a music forum if you didn't see music takes that offend all your sensibilities on a regular basis. I'm just trying to do my part in contributing to that :D I should say though that I LOVE The Unforgettable Fire, probably my 3rd fav after War and JT. I could listen to the title...

Haha, I wondered if there'd be any pushback to the ATYCLB comparison. I like both albums a fair bit, for what it's worth. Maybe, yeah. HTTT, TKOL and AMSP are kinda all on the same level for me, and my ranking of them is just a gut level thing. I should probably give them all more listens...

Whaddaya think of my (slightly) alternate Unforgettable Fire track-listing?

Fair enough, your mileage will of course vary if you like those two tracks more than I do/think they're essential to the album's overall effect. With ISS, I don't find it outright unpleasant to listen to or anything, but I guess I've always just seen it as a less exciting take on what they...

Whaddaya think of my (slightly) alternate Unforgettable Fire track-listing?

I think The Unforgettable Fire would be basically perfect if it weren't for "Indian Summer Sky" and "Elvis Presley and America". I'm not that huge on "MLK" either, however I think that's because it mostly functions as a lullaby outro but since EPAA is kinda snoozy already, following it with a...

My Radiohead ranking Kid A OK Computer The Bends Amnesiac In Rainbows (basically their All That You Can't Leave Behind, the band making a "comeback" by making some chill, catchy, unpretentious songs, but doesn't quite reach the heights or originality of their earlier stuff) King of Limbs Hail...

    Hello from Canada!

Hey, my name's Elliot. I'm 24 years old, living in Vancouver. I've been a big U2 fan since the age of 11 when I found The Joshua Tree on my Dad's CD rack and was taken by how cool these guys standing in the desert looked in the sleeve. Hearing "Where the Streets Have No Name" for the first time...
