New Album Discussion 1 - Songs of..... - Unreasonable guitar album

ATYCLB originally was the start of a decline for me because how dare they stray away from the experimental perfection of POP and the two albums that preceded. The irony being 2001 was when I really solidified my fandom and "discovered" them. I've since come around on that album because, as...

Could the new Miracle chorus be the most polarizing part of SOS for us fans?

New Album Discussion 1 - Songs of..... - Unreasonable guitar album

Favorite part of this is that the U2 spirit of reinvention is still alive. You can tell he doesn't just want to re-hash the past and sound like a classic rock/punk outfit by "turning the amps on". He wants a fresh sound. Now, whether that means a wealth of experimentation or chasing the...

Songs of Surrender - Discussion, reviews, impressions

I'm trying to think of how to approach the "what if" album. Just from following this thread, there's a wealth of stripped down format songs done over the years and I think it'd be great to use SOS and all the random versions throughout their history to create one 40-song mega-mix. Related...

It doesn't work for me. I love Bono using his lower register, but this goes below the range his voice sounds good low to me. It just sounds like he wants to emulate Cohen, but doesn't have the delivery for it to work like that. I think it'd also work better if he didn't take it back up in the...

Songs of Surrender - Discussion, reviews, impressions

As someone who was surprised at how much I like the new Walk On, I have to say while the new lyrics do flow just fine, I'm sorely missing things like "You're packing a suitcase for a place no one else has been. A place that has to be believed to be seen." which for me is one of U2's finest...

Songs of Surrender - Discussion, reviews, impressions

Had my second listen of IGWSHA this morning and it's not growing on me. I'm missing what everyone else is hearing, I think. It's too stripped down, loses the lush atmosphere that the original had, and Bono doing awkward/cringe through half of it. It went from an end of the world plea for...

Both Please and Heartland would be on my wish-list for a project like this if they weren't already both perfectly intimate versions

Overall thoughts, since I haven't shared yet: I really dig about 50% of it. The low points are related to 1. Bono's vocal choices. Not just talking about change in lyrics, but too many songs sound like what I'm referring to as Bono's "morning voice" where just a little more warming up and...

Hear me out. A new album of ludicrous guitar called "Legacy Act" in the same vein the title POP was meant to be tongue-in-cheek (but the masses won't get the joke). It will be billed as "The most relevant album you've ever heard by a band that should have packed it up and gone home!" Bring...

New Album Discussion 10 - Songs of Sir, this is a Wendy's, durr

I've been experiencing this vicariously through this thread so far. Going to wait until tomorrow afternoon when I can listen front-to-back uninterrupted for the full deal.

I've always thought the album version of Bad's strength was in the transition from 4th of July's creepy atmosphere into the clouds parting (not that Bad is an uplifter, but it's a nice musical flow that I can't seem to describe any other way)

New Album Discussion 10 - Songs of Sir, this is a Wendy's, durr

I'll take a hundred projects in the "interesting and fun at the time" vein over the "could have been..." scenario any day. It's a huge sigh of relief from fans who are critics and not just critics who are fans. I think looking at it in this light makes the most sense. Putting all this...

New Album Discussion 10 - Songs of Sir, this is a Wendy's, durr

Can't help but scroll past a review that says "40 of their best-known songs" or one that contains about five different ways of saying they rearranged the songs using metaphors like running into your ex. Bono's lyrics can be cringey, but yikes!

Might be my largely indifferent feelings about the original talking, but that was...um...not great.

The only thing I don't like about The Miracle is the parenthetical title. If you go to all that work to make a highly accessible track as a lead-off single and then make the title of the song very specific to your own experience what are you doing? Other than that, I really enjoy it. It...

New Album Discussion 10 - Songs of Sir, this is a Wendy's, durr

I think the place the clip picks up at in the song is a poor first-impression. I'm expecting I'll like the full track a lot better. I do like the brass arrangement that came about circa-2017 and glad they used it here because there's no way to re-imagine those vocals in a more powerful way...

New Album Discussion 10 - Songs of Sir, this is a Wendy's, durr

It's a perfectly effective song for where they were at the time. I remember being disappointed off the first couple listens. It has moments of being interesting, but still dripping with anthemic trying-to-relate to millennial radio pop melodies. It's better than a handful of SOI songs, but am...

It's definitely me trying to manifest, mostly; but I also know how Bono is the worst at describing how their new music is going to sound. 100% agree, by the way. I've had enough of the "raise your spirits, love, hope, freedom" we've mostly been dealt for over 20 years now.

Calling it early that Songs of Ass Scent may very well end up sounding this way rather than the grand biblical opus Bono seems to be shooting for; and I'm fine with that.
