    But Is It Art?

Many of the early modernists, specifically dadaism and surrealism relied, often unabashedly lifted their techniques and paintings from drawings done by children. Picasso famously said, 'Every child is an artist; the problem is how to remain one when one grows up.' There are several texts and...

One Family's Nightmare-Daughter's Accident Photos Go Viral

It is however interesting they are not only sadistic, but also how de-sensitized one can become to these images by looking at them over and over again; one can be intrigued by these images and feel nothing towards them because they have no shock value towards the onlooker. Andy Warhol's images...

    A Tattoo thread.......

I made an appointment for a new tattoo! I'm so excited. Turns out the artist is very popular so I got a month long wait. Another Oscar Wilde inspired tattoo but I think this one will be more interesting. I don't really like the idea of having an odd number of tattoos, I may have to get another...

    Going to Italy

Most Florentine arts are in churches, and I get sick of tombs and murals quickly. There are crazy strict viewing times (I missed Mosaccio's murals on the south bank because I had to trek up northside to try to wait in line for the Accademia) The galleries are filled with people with 3 hour...

    Going to Italy

I went in July and we decided to stay more days in Florence than in Rome. BIG mistake. It was so boring in Florence we had nothing to do. Too many tourists. Heard English more often than Italian. Churches got boring really fast. Venice and Rome in my opinion are more fun than Florence. There's...

so, who all here has stayed at The Clarence?

I've stayed there a lot, 3 days for my birthday, 2 that one time I didn't want to leave Dublin, and 2 when I left Dublin first time, and 2 when I left Dublin last time. A friend of mine worked in the bar for 2 years. I made friends with her because I was there so often. So many memories there...

    There Will Be Blood (SPOILERS)

I read the book first (Oil!, 1929) and I was wondering how it compared to the film. Has anyone read it and watched the film? Or, is this a horrible question to ask...

Bono to meet with Council to defend Clarence plans

My friend was doing her master's about the Georgian houses of Dublin, and how contemporary society deals with them. Some of the laws are so strict. I remember one she told me that if you demolish or change any Georgian era brick wall in Dublin, you have to build the renovation with the same...

    Adam's Museum Tour Video

I saw this show! It is really amazing, and the last room actually has the camera they used to make the photographs. The phtos are so beautiful, having a quality to them where they're modern and yet nostalgic. These artists don't even take planes, they go out on the QE2 when they go back and...

Raul Castro: Cubans can have cellphones

If they make only 20 dollars a month, how on earth are they going to afford a mobile phone even if they are allowed to have one? Sounds ludicrous

    Just Friends? Really?

God, I am in this exact same situation right now. It's a bit eerie reading this. My best advice is to keep your own sanity and don't get too involved. Sit on your hands if you have to, but don't talk to him a lot. I agree with you, I can't figure out why he wants to be friends but still wants...

I need Dublin hostel/B&B recommendations please...

I continually stayed at the Ashfield house because it's got some clean rooms, has internet in the lobby, and free 'breakfast' though it's not that great anymore. But it's dead central and not that noisy. It's on D'Olier which is a small street. The only problem is they opened up a club RIGHT...

    IO: Cake or death?

You must be in the fan club! I'm trying to convince my friend to go. If not, I'll be going by myself. I had such an awesome time at the Sexie show, I spoke French with him :)

    More master's thesis musings

I'm not sure you can strictly do phonetics and apply it to Behan. Im real into Brendan Behan, read all of his works, and it seems more to me that the phonetics in 20th c Irish literature is loosely baseed upon Irish slang, Irish language which is deeply phonetic (rarely things sound the same way...

    Anybody going to Dublin?

If you're going to be in Norwich, the closest airport would probably be Stansted (I think). They fly direct to Dublin on Ryan Air which is the cheapest and not really as bad as everyone makes it out to be. 45 minute plane ride if that. I have never done the ferry but I would imagine it goes out...

Bono to open an art gallery?

Where do I send my resume? Seriously... Is this going to a gallery like, housing art gallery or selling art gallery? Dublin is such a great place for new hip artists, and it's screaming for a thing like this, especially to be led by Bono. I actually love this idea. Bono's own private art...

    Rupert Everett Lets It Rip

To pretty much say that Oscar Wilde's lasting achievement was to be openly gay is the single most absurd thing I've ever heard. Everett, you may have played in a few of his plays, but you obviously know nothing about Wilde.

    The Lads In Dublin

Wow. They had those disgusting plastic orange ottoman chair thingies and their putrid counterpart round formica tables in Trinity even back then.... wow. But aw, the sculpture! and the fountain on Dame with the little trumpet guys! I love this thread.

    Ireland 2007 - cocaine nation

I think 'in other cities' is a key point as well, because Ireland has opened up as a place for others to travel TO not away from for jobs, and a nice standard of living. I'm not saying of course immigration=higher drug use, but it is because just like everywhere else, and being a part of that...

    Ireland 2007 - cocaine nation

it's only one of the most lethal signs of this, anyway. Karen Millen on Grafton Street? BT2? Gucci handbags for Christmas, and over-laden Brown Thomas bag people. It's all a symbol of this, whichever addiction it is, it's still a sign of the times in Ireland now. I wouldn't know much about the...

    Ireland 2007 - cocaine nation

Just a random thought, but my friends and I thought this high use of cocaine in society is a sign of the increasing affluence of Ireland coupled with the inability to really cope with it well-- given it had been such a poor country for so long and it became affluent so quickly. I think the...

    Beer

Guinness in the states is perhaps the most disgusting thing I have ever had beer-wise. I thought it was because it is pasteurised here, but not in Ireland? my tops are Heinekin, Stella, Spaten, Hefeweizen, Oktoberfest and Hoegaarden with a lemon.
