I saw the Help and I think that's it. I'm not much of a moviegoer anymore and I usually fall asleep if I rent them so I'm a little behind on movies.

It was more fun back in the 90's, when I'd actually seen most of the nominated films. I'd have regular Oscars parties and would often have the most correct predictions. Nowadays I don't bother with that.

I almost always have to be doing something else (like playing Minesweeper) while watching a DVD, or I'll fall asleep.

I can't tell you how many movies I missed the second half of while dating an ex boyfriend who was a big movie buff. It never failed.

I only see a movie in the theatre if it's a big action/blockbuster type movie that's best seen on the big screen. Otherwise I don't bother, or wait for years to actually get around to seeing it.

The only reason why I saw The Help is because we were on vacation, and my mom wanted to rent a DVD one night. She picked The Help, and I decided to humour her and watch it with her, instead of reading in my room. It was better than I had anticipated. I decided to read the book a few weeks later, and that was even better than the film.

I used to see a lot more movies in the theater, but now I either just go if it's something I'm dying to see (usually some big release like a new Batman movie), or I get on a roll where I just feel like going to the movies ... and can get off my butt on the weekends to go. ;)

If by a little behind you mean 5 or 6 years, then yes, I can relate. I think that's the last time I made an effort to actually see current movies.

:tsk: Agreed. I guess they have to cater a bit to the tweens these days.

Probably more of a wish to throw in a giant (recent) blockbuster? I don't know. That whole thing was annoying.

Maybe I'm finally nearing the end of my Oscars love affair. I usually like all the little extra montages they do, but I'm already annoyed and it's only been on for a half hour.

For anyone interested, Kathy Griffin says she's very ill with bird flu (she tweeted a pic of herself in a hospital gown with IV) and on painkillers, and is live-tweeting the Oscars, and that's pretty hilarious. I love her.

Last movie I saw in a theatre was From The Sky Down at TIFF

Yup, last one I saw was Man On The Train, and I downloaded that. Last in the theatre? That's so long ago, I'm embarrassed to mention it. God. I think it might even be Depp's version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. That was '05. But even dvds of movies, I rarely ever watch anything current! I'd rather watch a good tv series, of which there are tons these days.

sort of....I did go through a phase about 2-3 years ago where I wasn't working much so I rented a ton of movies from the previous few years to catch up. But I'm a good 2 years behind again.

Probably, I missed the intro so I don't even know what that montage was based on.

I did like the acceptance speech by those 2 guys a minute ago... "Let's get out of here!" :giggle:

I was watching the show and I didn't even know what the point of the montage was.

Probably "Hey, aren't movies great! Please stop downloading movies illegally."

Weird night. There was a passenger train derailment near here (where Bri lives, actually) on a line that I take when I go to Toronto - three killed, many injured. Following that, and the Oscar snarking.

We actually had a big discussion about that on the weekend. Sarah is a member of steampowered.com, which sells games ridiculously cheap and makes it extremely convenient for people to sign up and buy games and feel like they're getting a good deal. People gladly sign up for this site and others like it by the millions! And yet the music and movie industries just want to whine about people who rip them off, rather than come up with a business model that lets people be honest, and feel like they're getting value for their money. I have no sympathy for them.

I haven't seen any of the movies nominated for the Oscars this year, either. I hardly ever do see a lot of Oscar-nominated films, and when I do, it's not until after they've been out for years and I catch them on cable . The last movie I saw in a theater was...the 3D "Glee" movie, I think, 'cause my sister really wanted to see it but didn't have anyone else to go with.

The MOST recent movie I saw, period, though, was 'Paul', and that was a few days ago, on Cinemax. Very, very strange little movie, that one...:p.

The only awards shows I'd have any remote interest in would be any music-related ones and the Emmys, because those are where I'm most likely to have actually seen/heard something, and where my favorite people/bands/TV shows are most likely nominated for something. But to those who are watching the Oscars tonight, hope you're enjoying them!

Lol, my dad is so delusional. According to him the worldwide best known bassline is from the Bodyguard by Paul Simon. And Graceland is the best album ever.

I don't think the rest of the world agrees with that. At least not those under 50. It may be a good album but I highly doubt many people my age even know it.

I certainly know of the album, but I've only heard a couple songs at best from it. "You Can Call Me Al" was one of my favorite songs as a kid. I still like that song, actually :). It's so fun!

It's a very well-respected album. But I certainly know of many, MANY other albums that could easily take the "best album ever" title.

(My vote for a song with a kickass bassline? "Psycho Killer" by Talking Heads. And it was done by a woman, no less!)

Speaking of delusional people: I'm watching a crappy SyFy channel movie (ON DVD) for the simple fact it has Sean Bean.

 I've seen clips from those Syfy movies on "The Soup" before. They look like the sort of "so bad it's good" variety, the sort of thing that "Mystery Science Theater" would have loads of fun with.

It is funny what we're willing to sit through to see our favorite celebrities sometimes, isn't it?

Zu, nice picture! Glad to hear you had such a great weekend, you earned it . And GG, glad you managed to get somewhere at least with your boss. It's a start .

I agree about the industries figuring this shit out, but I feel for the musicians (not the millionnaires like Madonna or U2) who aren't getting my money. (And yes, everyone knows that they should get a better deal than what the record companies usually give them.)

But the movie industry .... I don't know. I've never downloaded a movie, but movies still make a shit-ton of money. Has there been a lot of talk about decreasing ticket sales, like you hear about with music?

Am I supposed to feel bad for movie studios who still make fucking zillions of dollars? I'm sure there are people further down the chain who still feel the sting, but again, it's probably more to do with the companies than the impact of downloading.

so yeah - some sympathy re the music industry, none for the movie industry.

I agree. I actually haven't downloaded music in years. And even when I did, it was mostly the industry behemoths who it wouldn't hurt. I'm far more likely to pay for music when it's a smaller indie band or a Canadian artist, the latter of which generally can't survive on music earnings unless they become international hits. The funny thing is though, there was this bill that was moving through Canadian government about illegal downloading, and there was a website full of Canadian bands who were against this bill, and many of the ones I'm referring to were against the law to be stricter about downloading - they wanted their music out there, and didn't want fans to be penalized, etc. Bands like that I'm far more likely to support monetarily.

Ha, I just saw (downloaded - shame!) Stop Making Sense for the first time on Friday night. Don't know what took me so long, since I've been at least a moderate Talking Heads fan for a LONG time. Oddly though, on the dvd, Psycho Killer is played by David Byrne and a boombox before Tina takes the stage.

 Most SyFy movies are of the "so bad it's good" variety. I actually kinda liked the one I watched today.

So which Sean Bean one was it?

I had to check to see where the train in that VIA derailment was heading - it was heading into TO, but I'm pretty sure that's the same part of the track the train I take coming back from my parents' house goes on, the background in some of the pics looks familiar...

Yeah, it's part of what they call the Windsor to Toronto corridor. It happened between the Aldershot and Brant Street Stations in Burlington - Brant Street is the one I get on to go to Toronto. Very close to Ikea (Ikeaville!), apparently. :(
