HA!

Art Theory....the great big mind fuck! I've been trough it; 4 years of art school.

Whats funny is that they pump you up with all of this bullshit, you get literally sick from it and it takes another 4 years when your OUT of school to figure it out. What I've learned is that its a 50/50 thing: artist/viewer. Yin/Yang. One is not more important then the other, they are symbiotic....unless of course their your client and are paying you to meet a deadline then you're their bitch. :D

Hah. Yes indeed. The dicks who wrote my school syllabus were pumped up to the eyeballs with post modern crap. It appeared in every subject. But I did this awesome English course which was about a rejection of post modernism. Anyway my art teacher was just a dumb bastard who lapped up the syllabus like a bitch, so every lesson we'd be learning about the value of a urinal as art or some rubbish.

Anyway, moral of the story, if you cut through the crap, you can reach the conclusion that, like you say, its symbiotic. What the artists means, and what the audience understands work in unison.

haha. Never thought I'd be discussing art theory on Interference!

HA! same here.

LOL! the urinal. Duchamp sucks.

We did Dada for a good 6 months. I nearly threw myself from the building. Art is so much more than that, and yet for 2 years I learnt how to embrace meaninglessness. Its a total joke. When you look at Degas, Monet, Francis Bacon, how can you say that there is no meaning?

Sorry, I could rant for hours about the shit I got taught at school.

Anyway, the picture on the boxset is  ... carry on:D

I think Achtung was the best.

I'm still undecided about this one. With the album title, they would have hard a hard time NOT visually demonstrating the concept behind the phrase...... but did they have to do it in gray? And couldn't they have found an imagine which had less of an um...LINE between sea and sky!?!?!?!?!? It seems a little TOO distinct to me. There are times when it can actually be hard to distinguish where one ends and the other begins and that doesn't seem to really be the case here....

Still, I won't make up my mind until I have the physical copy in my hands and can think about it a good long while....

yes and no.

to completely disregard artist intent and his or her background is to throw away the key to unlocking further understanding of the work.

yes, the viewer...or to be relevant to this thread LISTENER'S interpretation is valid, but in my opinion it doesn't completely trump the artist's intent.

You go and tell Bono that the song Lemon is about a kid at a Lemonade stand day dreaming on a hot summer day and see what he tells you. It may mean that to you but its not the original intent of the song. So who's correct?

Art means whatever you want it to mean. If an artist has an "intent" or "point" other than making art, they should probably consider crafting pamphlets, instead.

I think art should be about asking questions, not giving answers. So I rather have the band remain silent. And if you want to assign your beliefs with the band's, you're welcome to. But you don't have to. Just don't impose your interpretation on their intent. Both are valid, but neither should be confused with the other.

And if in an individual really wants to believe that Lemon is about a kid and his lemonade stand... so be it. After all, Bono believes Original of the Species is about one thing, but the Edge disagrees, stating it's about something else.

So who's correct?

Best,
Jason

I don't suppose I can get your order number? I'm talking to Amazon and they said they might be able to lower the price of mine, but only if I can prove that you paid less. You can e-mail me at rg_3@juno.com if you feel comfortable doing this. Thanks!

By the way, I checked with Amazon, and apparently they no longer have their price lowering guarantee!

I went to the monet and the impresionist exhibit, at the art gallery of nsw the other weekend. fantastic exhibit. I also saw the opening of Turner to Monet in Canberra (perks of the job!)

I don't buy into the idea that meaning is only valid when the audience interprets. You can't look at a painting like Cap Martin, near Menton, or Tree Trunks in the Grass and not be moved.

I have both of these up on my living room wall

I went to that exhibit as well (Monet in Sydney). It was amazing. You see the paintings countless times in reproductions and prints and post cards, but they just don't have anything on the real thing. I've actually been to the gardens in Giverney. The way he painted them is uncanny.

And I am trying to find a weekend when I can get down to Canberra to see the Degas exhibition thats on at the moment at the National Gallery. That, I imagine, would also be incredible. Have you been to see it yet?

At least the box set on Amazon DOES carry their Pre-order Price guarantee (not all items do)

"Pre-order Price Guarantee! Order now and if the Amazon.com price decreases between your order time and the end of the day of the release date, you'll receive the lowest price."

(This is on the US site, not sure about the other Amazon sites as prices can differ between them and the offer does not carry over between the sites.)

I love this cover. It reminds me of achtung baby and its oddness. I hope they go back into the studio like Larry wanted and finish the remaining songs. Tour until July and get back in the studio for another 3 months to finish the remaining songs. It should be great. I think they will release another in the Fall.

Back to the cover. It says everything about the songs. It says, we have embarked on something special here. People want to make the two bars out like equal signs but I see it as a symbol of the title of the album. Much like how the bulls eye was the icon for the last album. The two bars are representing NLOTH.

I have a feeling we are about to experience the first of 3 albums that U2 have left in them. After two more albums, they will retire knowing they created some of the best work ever done in music.
:hyper::hyper::hyper::hyper::hyper::hyper:

These guys will be writing music as long as they're physically capable! There's really no reason for them not to be creating 10, even 20 years from now!

The big tours.... that's the part that they will eventually have to cut back on......

Makes me feel like I'm opening up some Japan-only Nintendo DS bundle or something, lol.

I like it a lot though.

i havent yet. I have friends coming down this weekend, so I think we will be heading down. very much looking forward to it.:hyper:

Do you thing the special edition magazine/book will be any good?

I remember I got the special edition of HTDAAB (Which was £20 - less than half the NLOTH special ed. price!) and it was alright - there was some weird stuff in it, including artsy hands. Probably not worth the extra money though IMO.

So, do you reckon the magazine/book will be worth the money this time folks?

I enjoyed the HTDAAB book too. The band's artwork was great - and it had lyrics to Mercy  What I didn't like about the HTDAAB package was the cardboard housing for the CD.

I was also majorly pissed that the book version didn't have Fast Cars but that's another story.

It sounds like the NLOTH book has photos rather than artwork and it "appears" the box might include the digipack which would be an improvement on HTDAAB (either way I just hope the CD locks in plastic housing).

Amazon has the box set listed at $79.99 and Barnes and Noble has it listed at 76.79 (69.11 if you're a B&N member. I'm wondering what the retail price will be if you buy it at a midnight or day of release in the store? Here in NYC I assume Virgin Megastore will release it at 12AM on March 3rd. I'm wondering what they will charge for the box set.
