I think the = sign is a symbol of two halves. The top being the sky the botton being the ground. But since they both are the same color it becomes No Line On The Horizon. It becomes one. There is no difference. Just like thelaj suggested.

I love the direction they are going with this. Reminds me of the time they came out with Achtung Baby after Joshua Tree and Rattle and Hum. People were like what da f*ck! But it gave a clue to what was to come.

Perhaps the lack of blocks on the main cover suggest that the photograph is the theme of the set. BUT, the blocks on the actual album are its personal symbol. Note that Linear seems to have no such symbol.

BINGO!

thats exactly what I'm reading it to be.

I think people are thinking WAY too literally when looking at the cover. The equals sign is the LINK that makes the photo work. It took me a while to get it...maybe thats the same thing for a lot of other people who "still don't get it". who knows?

Until the band actually mentions their point of view we won't really know 100% (unless the lyrics are obvious). The artist is part of a movement of dadaist and surrealistic groups who believe that half the goal is making the art and the other half is the spectator adding his personal interpretation.

^my HTDAAB vinyl (bought in the UK) did not come with Fast Cars.

Here's my recreation as posted in the cover confirmed thread. Thanks to thelaj for the font.

i'm struck at how the "U" and the "2" are made to be made up of the exact same components, the same bars, just arranged in a different order.

sea is sky.

U is 2.

it's all so buddhist.

 I love this shit. It's beautiful. A week ago, wild horses couldn't get me to pay US $100 for a box set, no matter how georgeous it was. But the temptation is gonna be hard to resist. I think I'm at least sold on buying it on vinyl. i LOVE it. It's making me even more excited about the album. This is art. It suggests to me that U2 are looking at this album as an artwork, and as a whole. They havent done that in years.

I'm not that into Dada or Surrealistic art but I've always believed that all forms of art are forms of communication. Communication involves at least two people. Both people are equally important in the process. So yes, I defintely agree.

The more I look at the cover the more I love it. It is brilliant. I can't wait to hear the music.

yeah, now i want to buy the deluxe version with all the bells and whistles. Does Amazon do the pre-order, get it on day of release thing? I want to get it on the day of release. Or was it another retailer?

As an artist, I disagree completely. Once art is out of the artist's hands, it belongs to you, not them.

I disagree with almost everyone's interpretation of my work, but theirs is no more or less valid than mine.

yes and no.

to completely disregard artist intent and his or her background is to throw away the key to unlocking further understanding of the work.

yes, the viewer...or to be relevant to this thread LISTENER'S interpretation is valid, but in my opinion it doesn't completely trump the artist's intent.

You go and tell Bono that the song Lemon is about a kid at a Lemonade stand day dreaming on a hot summer day and see what he tells you. It may mean that to you but its not the original intent of the song. So who's correct?

That's the point. Unfortunately thats exactly what post modern art is. Neither is correct. Both is correct. Context doesn't matter. Context deos matter. The artist is more important. The Audience is more important. I've been fed this for two years in Art theory. It gets infuriating but its the philosophy of post modernism. You have to disregard meaning to find meaning.

It looks like the cd itself could be a landscaping shot of a beach escarpment. This could be classic Corbijn type stuff. Possibly JT-esque. The next page in the cd book has the four guys on a beach/desert somewhere. When was the last time we saw a photo of them on a beach?

I think we are in agreement. I'm just stating that I and some other people will want to know what the artist's interpretation is. I'm sure there will be some interviews down the pipeline that will illuminate that. Edge just briefly mentioned a Zen theme to No line on a horizon on Mojo for example.

There's a big contrast there. 2 opposing elements. To stamp a large = sign on top of them - it may show that even greatly contrasting things are elementally the same.

One is air and one is water but they are both elements.

If you consinder the GYBO line regarding submaring/gasoline, we may have submarines and the middle east may have gasoline but because we allow oursleves to argue back and forth we are acting inherently the same (=).

Each side wants what the other one has. So, when you reduce that argument - no one party is better than the other. We are equally as bad, good, and greedy.

Take it full circle - air and water are essential and capable of catastrophy. When they mix; hurricanes, tsunamis and typhoons can occur.

"I dont want to talk about war between nations"

I work as an artist and in art therapy. A work of art is open to interpretation, and the new U2 cover - which is, btw, beautiful - makes perfect sense to me in so many ways. The more I think about it, the more interesting it becomes.

I can't wait for the box set!
