Relevant quotes:

Will it be another Achtung Baby, or more like How to Dismantle An Atomic Bomb? We were supposed to be talking about Acadie, but couldn't resist pressing for hints about Lanois' most famous clients. U2 is due to release the new disc next year.

"It's very sophisticated, rhythmically," said a coy Lanois. "I'm talking high-grade and wicked. We've gotten to a place, a combination of myself and (Brian) Eno, I think we've just done something that's never been done before. The president of the company is singing like a bird."

As with the new U2 material, he says the music has a "rhythmic sophistication," a fascination sparked for him by American neo-soul artist D'Angelo, whose 2000 album, Voodoo, earned two Grammy Awards.

"D'Angelo did some beautiful rhythmic work that always made an impression on me, and I feel that I've entered the world of D'Angelo with the U2 work, but also with this rhythmic work of mine."

"Singing like a bird" is so vague. What kind of bird, exactly? A robin? A penguin? A crane in its nest?

yeah that's quite some statement but we'll see i guess

would be less risky to say "they've just accomplished something they haven't done before"

OKAY, but there is no fucking way that Lanois would say such a thing unless this was truly a new U2....so I'm very confident in this change of sound...I mean maybe it's not true that they've done something nobody else has before, that surely could be an exaggeration and a statement clouded by his own excitement of the new record....but at the very least this has to mean a new U2 sound....c'mon...

THINK ABOUT IT!!! He's not some ignorant bystander overhearing a few tracks......

He is aware of everything U2 has done, and all the different styles they have covered or stepped foot in....yes, this is something new, it has to be.

Lanois said exactly the same about ATYCLB & HTDAAB.

He's not a trusted source.

"exactly the same thing" eh?
exactly.
dig up some D'Angelo quotes for me, would you?

I've heard the guy speak, he's passionate, but down to earth. he's not spewing meaningless hyperbole for the sake of it

I find it really interesting that the band proper have been fairly mum on the album, while it's Lanois who has interview upon interview. It's also funny to note that he's been saying iterations of the same thing over and over. President of the company singing like a bird....etc. It almost makes me believe that it's the same one or two interviews that are making news over and over again, though I know that's not true.

I couldn't care less if the president of the record label is singing like a bird. That's not a good thing. It means it's a commericial record with mass appeal. Fair enough. But I thought we were in for a "new" sound, and a"reinvention" again. I don't need "Kid A" but I don't want "HTDAAB Pt.2" either.

By the way, Lanois is an egotistical man who, surely, deserves credit for alot of the U2 things he's done, but surely not as much credit as he gives himself. (Joshua Tree behind the record interview anyone?):eyebrow:

He's right about that, nobody has ever pumped out so much hype and talked in such huge and twisty circles.

More importantly, nobody has ever managed to get people on this forum to suddenly become psychic and be able to predict everything about this album based on a single sentence from a single person, which may or may not be true.

Post of the year, and the sad definition of what waiting for this new record is like. :(

I find that odd too. If this album is "groundbreaking in sounds", "everyone wants the next masterpiece" (Lanois quotes), "best song I ever did with U2" (Eno), "best album" (Lillywhite)...the band is fairly qiuet this time around, including Bono's hype. Not only that, they're writing more material.

The band members certainly had more to say on Bomb, and if half the hype is true, this will be a better album. So why be quiet now ? Are the producers biased/missing something ?

You seriously can come to that conclusion just because Bono is singing..eh....well :confused:

If the band and Lanois are in NYC working on the album, I'd imagine it'd be final stages (mixing/mastering)

Quoted for truth.
