FTW = for the win

My first guess was "fuck the what" too - like people had grown tired of WTF.

I hope Bono sings One and Simon tells him it is a terrible rendition and then they get into a scappy fist fight.

Now THAT would be funny.

Seriously though, some of you are reacting to this as if GWB walked out of a porn shop...

When did Jesus get elected as the Jesus of cool?

Sarcasm...
I thought you guys would have developed that infamous Irish sarcasm after spending all this time listening to U2.

Some of you guys seriously need to develop a sense of humor.

I don't think the sentiments in this thread were directed at your posts, just the general idea that we should roll our eyes and get sick of starving people after their 15 minutes of fame are over and they're no longer the 'it' topic of the minute.

FTW means fuck the world. Always has, always will.

I'm not sure if you're serious or are referring to something else.

"For the win" fits in every instance I've ever seen it used on the internet.

maybe you're talking about how it used to be used or something.

Never underestimate the umpteenth opportunity to whine about his activism. Or taking pot shots at him and gloat at the bashing he gets in the media.

I'm serious, but my comment has nothing to do with this thread.

The internet isn't the real world. If you say FTW in the real world, at least with the people I know, it means only Fuck the World, nothing else.

See above.

i don't know which is better, people freaking out or people freaking out about people freaking out

I'll watch it but I think this is the worst thing Bono can do.

Ugh I don't know. I'm not trying to be a jerk but seriously it's a bad idea.

I can see your point - providing you think this is a bit of a "sell out".

However, it's not Bono advertising U2. To me, that would be a sell out. U2 performing on SNL is cool. U2 performing on AI to sell albums is highly questionable (especially since U2 have yet to let AI use any of their songs).

Given that it's Bono "advertising" DATA and the ONE campaign, why not show this? AI reaches a HUGE audience. 30M+ votes are made each week. While the audience is younger (or at least those who vote are), it does reach across many age groups. I've watched it and I've heard those older than I am discuss it.

So given that the goal is to raise awareness and then generate some $$ purely from votes, I think this is a great idea. In fact, as soon as Ryan Seacrest started discussing the trip he and Simon took to Africa, I thought of Bono. It's great that events Bono was part of in the 80's are gaining more and more momentum, even if it took 20 years to get this big. But AIDS is far greater than a famine. Famines may last several years - but AIDS is here to stay, unless we get going now!

In that context, I support this decision.

When did Bono appear on American Idol the last time?

When has Bono appeared on AI to promote anything related to U2?

This is not a "media whore" for his own self interests or profit. This is for DATA and the ONE campaign.

Please dissociate Bono of U2 with Bono of DATA/ONE. The two are not necessarily the same.

Now, if Bono went on AI as a guest judge, or someone who worked with the contestents to sing U2 songs (as many, MANY artists have done), then one might complain about "selling out". But this is not the case here. And given what's at stake, I'm very happy to see Bono "sell out" if it helps millions of people in Africa.

when Bono does these television appearances, doesn't he usually drag Edge with him and do an acoustic set?

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Gwen Stefani, Pink and Annie Lennox will perform on a star-studded two-night "American Idol" charity special next month.

U2's Bono also is also expected to sing, and Sacha Baron Cohen will appear in character as Borat. Other performers lined up include crooners Josh Groban and Michael Buble, and classical-crossover combo Il Divo.

"Idol Gives Back" is designed to raise awareness and funds for poverty-relief organizations that help children and young people in the U.S. and Africa. Fox has partnered on the project with Charity Projects Entertainment Fund.

During the April 24 episodes, airing from 8-9 p.m., the top six finalists will sing about compassion and hope; for every vote cast via phone or text message, "Idol" sponsors Coca-Cola, AT&T and others will donate money to charity. The expanded results show, airing from 8-10 p.m. April 25, will feature the celebrities taking the stage. During that episode, viewers will be able to make their own donations via toll-free lines and the Internet. The Ford Motor Co. also will contribute to the cause in connection with its weekly music video.

"Idol" creator Simon Fuller said he hoped the event would be a big success, "allowing us to continue to make these important, world-changing shows for many years to come."

The money raised by the event will equally benefit the U.S. and Africa, aiding such organizations as the U.S. Fund for UNICEF, the Global Fund, Save the Children, Nothing but Nets and Malaria No More.

"Idol Gives Back" also is providing a link on its Web site (www.americanidol.com/idolgivesback) to One: The Campaign to Make Poverty History. Said Bono, co-founder of the One campaign, "I wouldn't underestimate the reach of ('Idol') or the impact its audience can have."

GG's new location.

We've gone what, two weeks without a huge U2-related freakout? Damn.

American Idol is now on the list with Win Butler, Noel Gallagher, and the entire state of North Dakota now.

Bono and Borat?!?!

I might have to watch American Idol when that happens.

No...:eyebrow:

The only time the Edge accompanies Bono on TV for an acoustic set, they are usually promoting U2. This will not be the case as far as AI is concerned.

He's promoting the plight of Africa, and looking for support there. Dr. Who is right, there's not sellout here, he's just using the media to his advantage, but not for his benefit. Nothing wrong with that...is there...

there. finally. someone said it.

I thought that was all everyone did here... half the forum tells the other half to get a sense of humour.

I don't like the concept of Idol shows, but good on Bono for using their immense audience for the forces of good.
