Hitting the High Notes for Bono

Sarah Walters

AN engineering firm from Warrington is helping Irish supergroup U2 to hit all the right notes by designing the acoustics in their new recording studio.

The studio will take up the top two floors of the U2 Tower, a twisted profile building that will stand at the end of the redeveloped Dublin Docklands. The remaining floors will house luxury apartments.

Hyder Consulting, which has a regional office in Warrington, has teamed up with Irish structural engineers P.H. McCarthy to complete the 100m-high tower.

Speaking about the contract, Hyder Consulting's project director, Edwin Dibb-Fuller, said: "Our role in the project was originally advertised as an open tender in the Official Journal of the European Community. Numerous companies wanted to be involved in this prestigious project and we were delighted to be selected.

"Together with P.H. McCarthy, we are responsible for the structural engineering of the building itself and also for the civil engineering which includes aspects such as foundations and drainage."

The Warrington office employs 130 consultant engineers who will carry out all the acoustic engineering works on the building, pictured below.

The tower is one of several new structures planned for the Grand Canal Dock peninsula in Dublin. When it is complete, the dockland site will house 93,000 sq metres of commerical space, 1,200 apartments, a number of up-market hotels and the new Grand Canal Theatre.

"As a company and individual engineers, we want to work on world-class structures, and the U2 Tower definitely is one," said Mr Dibb-Fuller.

"As well as being an innovative looking structure, it will also be one of the tallest buildings in Ireland."

Hyder, which employs 2,500 staff in the UK and overseas, is currently working on the Burj Dubai, which will be the tallest building in the world when it is completed.

Anyone have any pics of the proposed tower?

Imagine living in one of those apartments! Sneak upstairs for a little show now and then!

Looks OK, though I've never been to that area so I don't know how well it would fit in.

The entire neighborhood is being raized and luxury condos and shops being put in place of the warehouses and factories that currently populate the area so I think this new building will fit in fine.

You'd probably end up banging on the ceiling with a broom stick because of all the noise....

HaHa, I can just picture it...call the police to complain about the loud music from your upstairs neighbors!
