ShoWest gets peek at 'U2'

3-D film gets the rock star treatment

By DAVID S. COHEN

ShoWest saw another boost for 3-D content on Thursday morning when Real D unveiled the first previews of footage from the upcoming concert film "U2 3D."

Aud watched the teaser trailer and the song "Sunday, Bloody Sunday."

Pic's producers call it the first live-action film to be shot, posted and exhibited entirely in 3-D. It will include 14-15 songs in 80-90 minutes.

Shot at the band's concerts in South America, the film was independently produced by 3ality Digital. Producers are hoping for a fall release though a distributor has not yet been secured.

Film will play only in 3-D-capable digital theaters.

Real D prexy Joseph Peixoto made a point of telling the aud that the presentation was shown with a single 2K Barco digital projector -- a typical commercial digital projection system.

That became a concern after it turned out that Sony's Wednesday presentation of 3-D footage from the NBA All-Star game, while impressive, was shown with two projectors, a setup far too expensive and high maintenance for most commercial applications.

Producer Jon Shapiro of 3ality said U2 was the perfect subject for a 3-D concert film because "there's a connectivity at a U2 concert you can't describe unless you've been there."

Film's directors, Catherine Owens and Mark Pellington, have long experience creating the band's concert visuals.

Ironically, the quality of the 3-D picture in "U2 3D" may reveal a whole new set of challenges for cinema owners, warned sound maven Michael Leader, prexy of Leader Cinema.

"Cinema sound systems are not up to what we just experienced," Leader told Daily Variety after the "U2 3D" preview.

He said that current theater sound systems don't even play back all of what's on typical movie soundtracks, especially in the bass, and don't have anything close to the dynamic range needed to properly play rock-concert films.

"You need a Formula One racing engine in your sound system to do this," Leader said.

Pumping up the volume on the bass would also exacerbate problems with sound leaking between theaters in multiplexes, he said.

Preview was part of Real D's demonstration of 3-D for alternative content. Demo also included a look at the "Chicken Little" videogame in 3-D.

"A lot of people spend a lot of time in front of computers, and they are people we want back in theaters," said Peixoto.

Demonstration did not include multiplayer games, however, and Peixoto spoke only of single-player games.

14-15 songs???  what happened to the other 7 songs???? :(

Perhaps these are the 14-15 that looked the best, and the others were cut because of bad camera angles or sound. I'm happy with this number, since they'll probably be padding it out with behind-the-scenes footage. Plus it's going to be different to sit through a movie in a theater with 3-D technology than watch a DVD at home.

I just hope there are enough theaters with the right sound equipment. It would be a shame if the movie looks great and the audio is sub-par.

When is it Fall? April?

If it is, I'm there cos' it's gonna be my birthday!!

Like you're not happy. How can you not be, you get to see a mini U2 concert. It's gonna rockkkkkkkkkkk!!!!

My God, are you people ever happy????

First of all, I am the only one who posted anything remotely "unhappy". So no need to blame everyone. :tsk:

Secondly, of course I'm happy! I'll completely be there opening night, overly excited and no qualms.

I was just a bit shocked because ever since I first heard about this project, I was operating under the presumption that it was going to be the whole show. (Looking back I don't know why I thought that. No one ever said it was going to be a whole concert. ) I guess I was just taken aback at first, and a bit worried about which songs didn't make final cut.

But, yes I'm happy. I'm completely thrilled! I've heard so many great things about the South American shows.

I'm hoping groups of Interferencers will get together and go see it in their hometowns. Woo-Hoo! Movie party!

Can somebody post the rumored setlist.... so we can then start voting on which songs we would prefer 2 have on there?

Not Australian Fall. April here is spring, and Fall is October, November.

When it comes to Berlin, and we have a 3D I-Max, I will be there as often as possible :)

I am happy and can't wait. Who know's maybe they will at the other 7 SONGS on the DVD!!!!!! So quit whining.

Sorry, dont take it personal. However, having been on this site for 7 years I've heard endless rants on how the setlists suck, the dvd's offer nothing "cool", the new albums arent what everyone was hoping for...U2 are NOT listening to this board and doing exactly what we want!...and so on and so on. Anyways, carry on.

so.. what's out?

I hope:

ELEVATION
ISHFWILF
The First Time
Beautiful Day (give it a rest)
Sometimes...
OOTS
Yahweh

because from the ZOO encore.. what can they posibly take out?... EVERYTHING works...

So would this be an IMAX film?

No.

Real D is the latest digital technology set to replace standard 35mm film in the coming years. Several theaters around the country have installed one or two of the digital projectors (DLP) in their buildings. Digital projection is still in its infancy, but the benefits vs. 35mm are too numerous to list.

I happen to run a theater that has a Barco digital projector, and we are 3D capable. I'll let you all know how good it is after I run it the day before it opens

 :sexywink: I can't wait.....no complaints here!! Cuz anything on film that includes the music..is still going to make me wanna rock in the isles!! hee..lol, ok In the back! ;)

WOW, this sounds awesome! This should take care of my post tour stress. I hope they have the Real D here in my town. We have several IMAX but I have never even heard of Real D:reject:
*crosses fingers and hopes for the best.

Looks like I will be seeing this over and over and taking the kids too. 80 - 90 minutes of 3D.

Beside I'll take anything U2 between tours.:reject:
:giggle:
me too :D {just about} , jcos!

BUT :grumpy: :( I haver never been able to literally "eyes/brain process" 3-D thru 2-D art-stuff too well....esp the old/ole Red & Green glasses thing. ACK!

THANK GOODNESS~~ in actual 3-D in life- i have quite good spatial & excellent artistic sculptural skills :D!
ONLY the old plastic holder for tiny slides on stiff-paper-wheel thingie you clicked thru to see each slide possibly worked for me.
AT LEAST I didn't get headaches from using them!!
Viewmaster?

AND...... I could/can never do Magic Eye Stuff all these yrs! :grumpy:

In spite of the fact that I Really Might get a NASTY headach or dizziness I will brave this once!
