After seeing four shows on the Vertigo Tour, it certainly WILL be hard to top in the future.
Still, as others have mentioned, Bono said at the shows how the band is looking toward the future, taking some of their best bits of the past with them.
Bono was also quoted in that Rolling Stone article not to long ago that U2 has another ten years in them.
That might only mean two more albums/tours, but I don't see them hanging it up after Vertigo is complete. Too successful and too much future money at stake for the record label, promoters and so forth.
Still, you never know what fate may have in store. Health, family, etc. can be factors for any one of the band members bowing out unexpectedly.
Despite my other favorite band, RUSH, still going strong 30 years down the road, I've learned to appreciate each concert as potentially the last one.
