Week 35

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Germany :

Bomb : # 57 (# 53)
City : # 78 (# 73)

...hopefully the Munich gig will push Bomb back into top 40.

Surely Holland is 2nd to Ireland though : Bomb # 4 this week / # 5 last week - that's actually the same as Ireland 3/4 wks ago. And remember, Holland has a separate chart for Back Catalogue albums...which U2 are also completely dominating right now.

another 10% drop
will be out of the BB 200 next week.

is the 3rd leg of the tour likely to increase sales the way it has in europe?

Thanks for the statistics SOLDATTI!

The BOMB is on a downward spiral in the USA and this is probably its last week on the Billboard 200 unless:

1. A NEW single is released in the USA and is able to get significant airplay on the radio to boost sales of the album so it can return to the chart.

2. The third leg of the Vertigo tour, with all the media that will surround it in each city it goes to, is enough to bring album sales to the level where it can chart again. The problem with this is that the tour can only play a few cities per week. The question is whether the sales effect from playing 3 or 4 cities will be enough to make a difference on the chart on a weekly basis. In the United States in the past, the tour has mainly stabilized sales rather than increase them.

3. The annual awards season starts at the end of August and will go through February the following year. High profile awards shows that can boost sales are the MTV Awards, Billboard music awards, American Music Awards, and the Grammy awards show.

The best thing that could happen would be for a new single like Miracle Drug to really take off at radio. Unfortunately I think this is unlikely considering that the 3 singles released after Vertigo have all failed to get significant airplay on the radio. Still a song like Miracle Drug is so powerful that it may be able to break through even the most rigid radio formats.

The tour could bring the album back into the Billboard chart, but as said before, this is unlikely.

The most likely way the album will rechart at this point is for the bands music to do well at the upcoming awards shows this year and next. Getting nominated for 8 Grammy awards and winning most of them would vault the album all the way back up into the top 20 of the chart!

nice surprise...Bomb should now stay on mediatraffic top 40 tomarrow...if only the same thing was happening in the US though.

im surprised to see bomb only at #94 in canada, considering the success from Vertigo, ABOY, Sometimes and COBL there. the singles have had huge sucess unlike in the US, but the album still isnt in a great position in canada. (though twice as good as the US), i just thought the hit singles would have helped more.

it seems to me that in the US a hit single makes an album have long term success, but in other countries singles quickly move albums up the charts then they quickly fall again.

But the airplay chart is the best indicator of a singles popularity esp. in Canada where the sales chart means v.little - & COBL has only reached # 34 on airplay. Compare that to the UK where COBL was # 2 on the airplay chart for 3 straight weeks & it's still in the top 25.

Unfortunately U2 just aren't getting enough airplay in N.America.

HTDAAB gains one position in the Mediatraffic World Chart, from 32 to 31.

Wow...highest position for 10 weeks - excellent!! I guess Bomb must have sold about 38,000...so total estimated mediatraffic sales now :

7,802,000 + 37,000 (w.33) + 38,000 (w.34) + 40,000 (w.35) + 38,000 (w.36) = 7,955,000

The number 29 album sold 61k, number 32 sold 60k and 33 sold 57k. I know mediatraffic also take into account the number of countries an album is charting in (although not clear what weighting they give that) but given these figures 38k looks low.

If that's true, HTDAAB has been selling more like 60K the last few weeks, not just 38-45K. And that, correspondingly, means that total sales are now over 8M worldwide.

It is true that those 3 albums sold that many BUT mediatraffic use points as well as sales to determine their weekly top 40 chart : the more countries an album is charting in then the more points it has & HTDAAB is charting in countries all over the world whilst those 3 albums have only just debuted on the US & Japan charts only.

As for Bomb's total sales...well, Mediatraffic told me that they cover ‘nearly 95%’ of total album sales which, if true, would mean that Bomb has now sold around 8.5M (as it's now sold around 7.955M at mediatraffic).

Personally though I think that mediatraffic cover more like 90% of total album sales - maybe even as low as 85%...which means that Bomb has now sold 8.8-9.2M worldwide.

I agree with you edge3, sales (to consumers) of bomb should be at 9 million now. I still don´t rule out the possibility for the album to hit the 10 million mark by the end of 2005, at least in terms of shifted copies.
However, for this to happen, worlwide sales will have to remain steady around 30-40 K a week. It is clear the album needs to gain momentum in the States again.

Go bomb!

City of Blinding Lights was not in this week's Billboard Hot Video Clips........last week it premiered on the chart at #24.........so less video airplay does not bode well for an increase in radioplay.......I guess we can finally right the single off as dead.

Bring on "Original"!
