U2’s Friday Night Flirtation

Bono and the boys turned up the heat a little more for their second show in Auckland, New Zealand. “It’s Friday night, we’re a long way from home…and we’re feeling a little flirtatious,” announced Bono. “It’s been a long romance with this wild and extraordinary country, but tonight I think we should go all the way.”

Always more relaxed for a second-night show, U2 breezed its way through a set that varied little from the previous night, but by fan accounts was without some of the mistakes that come with a tour leg opener.

After an unseasonable cold first night, the temperature was warmer for fans for Friday night. Kiwis sang along to U2’s hits “Beautiful Day” and “New Year’s Day.” A very full GA section on the field danced to “Get On Your Boots.” “Angel of Harlem” was dedicated to Beyoncé who was at the show with husband and show opener Jay-Z; it replaced “Pride” from the previous night. “Scarlet” was preformed for a second night, sans Jay-Z however.

“Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me” wowed Mt. Smart Stadium, taking the place of “Ultra Violet” from the first night.

Bono told the crowd that Aung San Suu Kyi sent her thanks and he credits U2 fans for raising awareness of her imprisonment and for applying the pressure that led to her release. Bono reminds fans that there still are more than 2,000 political prisoners around the world and the fight continues.

The tour continues in Australia on 1 December 2010 with the first of two shows in Melbourne.
