Why the Yankees will ROCK

i admit, last year the red sox were the best team in baseball. However, this year, the yankees come in as the underdogs, as they have the past two years (everyone seems to forget that). Johnson might be old, but in comparison to the red sox, so is wells. Schilling is up their, Moose is to. Pavano and Miller, Wright and Arroyo. They are all good matchups. The key is the fifth starter. Brownie, vs Halama? I don't follow the sox 24/7, but I think they have a couple pitchers competing for the fifth spot.


As for the bullpen, the Yankees revamped. Thats all I have to say about that.


Also, on the infamou, Giambi cannot produce without steroids. Last year, in Spring Training, the whole fuss was about how he had lost so much weight. At this point, according to his jury statement, he was off of the roids. At the beginning of the season, he was FANTASTIC. Then all that "stuff" started to set in. If Giambi can perform like that, he is just another valueable commodity the Yankees will have, which in turn, might give them the edge over a couple of teams.

Funny that every sportsbook in Vegas ha sthe Yankees as odds on favorites to win the World series, yet you paint them as underdogs. C'mon, you gotta do better than that.
 
im just stating that they are considered underdogs in the AL east, with the sox being the front runners. Those are the two I was forgetting. Matt Clement, he is shaky, but if he can perform (same with Wake) both pitching staffs are even.

As Headache has illustrated the Yanks are currently clear cut favorites over the Red Sox for the division and beyond,

but if he can perform (same with Wake) both pitching staffs are even.

Yanks rotation on paper has huge advantages over Sox:
Using the 10 point must system:
1. Johnson vs Schilling (Advantage Johnson 10-9, unless Schilling's still hurt then its 10-5)
2. Mussina vs Wells (advantage Mussina 10-6, unless Wells' back goes, then 10-1)
3. Pavano vs. Wakefield (Advantage Pavano 10-8, unless he chokes on big apple pie)
4. Wright vs Clement ( draw)
5. Brown vs Arroyo (draw)
Final tally: Yanks 50, Sox 43
X-factor for Sox is Wade Miller, who could push Arroyo to bullpen

another reason why i always disliked red sox fans... they whine about how they hate yankee fans, but they don't have to deal with this shit every day...


see, the smrt response would've been, oh i don't know... "Who cares about the Mets? They're not in our division. Let's worry about beating those a-holes from Boston first."

I remember those days too. I especially remember how Mets fans had a very neener-neener attitude towards us Yankees fans!!!

Every year it seemed like THE year of the Subway Series, and every year the Yankees couldn't win the AL, not even with players like Mattingly, Winfield, Henderson...

It will be interesting to see how the Mets fare with their new acquisitions. I'm still disappointed that Mo Vaughn was a disappointment to them...he was my favorite non-Yankee player during those times and I'm sorry his career ended on such a down note.
 
Because they have all the money thats why they will be competitive it has nothing to do with good management.

Baseball needs a reality check.
 
alas... many teams have lots of money. but not many teams are always succesful. yes, the main reason the yankees are good is their budget... but don't fool yourself... all the money in the world is meaningless without good management to handle it.

just look at the mets from 1989-2004 (with the exception of 1999 and 2000)

The rivalry between the mets and the yanks is as big as ever this year, due to the fact that the mets obtained the best free agent in baseball in beltran, who most thought would originally sing with the yankees. Therefore, Met fans somehow think that they stole him from us. NEWS FLASH: the yankees didn't make him an offer, so how was he stolen?


Secondly, Mets fans are somewhat happy really because they feel they can compete with the better teams, for instance, the braves. The Mets still can't beat the braves. The Braves will be better, im not sure how, but they will be, they always are. The Braves rotation is better. Simple as that



Where does SCOTT KAZMIR land on the list of names never wanted to be heard again? I like the word.


On that same note, what about VICTOR ZAMBRANO?

i believe it reached it's peak in 2000, but i may be wrong... nahhh... playing each other in the world series, yea... that's about as big as you can get.

you must talk to some stupid met fans. carlos beltran is a met because they offered him the most money. no other reason. if he was stolen from anyone, it was houston. boras did, however, offer beltran to the yankees. they were in the middle of the randy johnson deal at the time and turned the offer down.

most met fans i know are self hating masochists, and their optimism is based, like you said, on the fact that they might actually be able to compete with the better teams. note the word is compete, not defeat. 1when a team sucks so much for so long, sometimes simply competing will do. call it a step in the right direction... for once.

what about him? when you root for a team that traded nolan ryan for jim fergosi, lenny dykstra for juan samuell, couldn't sign roger clemmens out of high school, alowing him to go back into the draft pool the next year, drafted the only #1 pick in MLB history to never make the major leagues (the #2 pick was reggie jackson) and trade tom seaver for joe fucking torre...

yea... kazmir for zambrano really doesn't bug ya that much... yet.

Braves Spoil Big Unit's Debut With Yankees

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The New York Yankees (news) waited a long time to acquire Randy Johnson and send him to the mound. They'll have to wait some more to see his best fastball.


The Big Unit finally made his much-anticipated Yankees debut Tuesday, working two innings in an 8-2 loss to the Atlanta Braves (news). He threw 36 pitches, 22 for strikes, and gave up a two-run homer to old nemesis Chipper Jones in an uneven performance.

"I know I still have a long way to go to be ready for opening day," Johnson said. "But we'll get there."

Most important, he said he felt fine physically; Johnson was scratched from his first scheduled start last week because of a tight left calf.

Facing the Braves for the first time since he pitched a perfect game against them last May, the five-time Cy Young Award winner struck out his first batter, Nick Green.

But Brian Jordan singled and Johnson fell behind 2-0 on Jones before he drove a 92 mph fastball over the left-field fence.

"It looked like his first spring outing," said Jones, a .370 career hitter against Johnson with six homers in 27 at-bats. "I don't think anybody in baseball expected him to come out blowing 97. A guy like Randy's got to get his feet under him, just like the rest of us. He'll be on his game come Oct. 1."

That's right, October.

The Yankees didn't start pursuing Johnson last summer just to add a few wins during the regular season. No, they pushed to finally complete a drawn-out trade with Arizona in January because they needed an ace in the postseason.

And that's exactly why nobody sounded worried about the 41-year-old Johnson losing his first outing of spring training.

"Everything turned out fine. He got his work in," manager Joe Torre said. "I'm not really concerned about statistics."

Johnson retired Andruw Jones on a flyball and struck out Raul Mondesi to end the first inning, then got through the second unscathed despite a two-out walk.

The 6-foot-10 left-hander hit 94 mph on the scoreboard radar gun but was mostly in the low 90s with his fastball.

"He's not trying to set up anybody. He's just trying to make his pitches," teammate Derek Jeter said. "He wasn't even trying to throw hard, I don't think."

Nearly two hours before the game, fans were lined up four rows deep behind the New York dugout. Meanwhile, Johnson was sitting quietly in the clubhouse, reading a newspaper and watching television alone.

The Yankees noticed how serious their new teammate is on the day he pitches — even in spring training.

"I didn't know if we should be laughing in there," slugger Gary Sheffield said.



Johnson is yet to put on pinstripes in a game — he wore a navy blue No. 41 jersey for this trip to Atlanta's complex at Disney World and received a big ovation from the crowd of 10,683 as he walked out to the mound.

He downplayed the significance of his first outing with the Yankees, but did say it was exciting to get back on the mound. He said he stuck mostly with his fastball and slider, though he acknowledged they weren't sharp.

"For the first time out, I'm pretty happy," Johnson said. "I felt really comfortable out there."

Mike Hampton looked fantastic again for Atlanta, yielding only a single in three shutout innings. He got Jeter on a called third strike and recorded five groundouts. Coming off left knee surgery, Hampton opened the spring with two hitless innings against the Dodgers last week.

"I'm probably a little ahead of the pace in recent years," he said. "If anything, my knee's probably a blessing in disguise in that I'm not jumping toward the plate because I can't push off with as much intensity."

Braves starters have not allowed a run this spring, combining for 12 scoreless innings with only one walk and six strikeouts.

Jones added a double and scored twice. Jordan finished with two hits, including an RBI single, and is 7-for-10 this spring.
