I didn't think about that. I was just including the bands, but you could list solo artists, too.

Cathrine Wheel? Really?

Nice.

Oh, yeah. Love 'em. There's a CW appreciation thread somewhere on this site, I posted on there once or twice. I am bummed they broke up, and their last album was such a let down, but, their first 4 albums, and their B-sides collection are, to me, amazing. Saw them LIVE a few times out in LA, they were great. They opened one show with "Strange Fruit" and it just blew the roof off of the place.

The lead singer, Rob Dickinson, released a solo album. It was pretty good, a little mellow.

U2
Pavement/Stephen Malkmus
Bob Dylan
Steely Dan
Prince
Radiohead
New Order
Joni Mitchell
Super Furry Animals
Spoon

I tried to only include artists that are still recording new music as I hate the idea of having something unchanging on a list of favorites. Otheriwse The Beatles and The Replacements would be pretty high up there, and R.E.M. has an opportunity to get back on my list if they ever release a decent album this decade.

and some more, hehehe.

men at work
blue nile
the the
xtc
REM
thompson twins
chemical brothers
split enz
culture club
cocteau twins
ABBA
talking heads

Tonight's list and order:

1. Beatles
2. U2
3. Peter Gabriel
4. R.E.M.
5. Radiohead
6. Arcade Fire
7. Wilco
8. Sting/Police
9. Bruce Springsteen
10. Van Morrison
11. Paul Simon/Simon & Garfunkel
12. Mark Knopfler/Dire Straits
13. Tori Amos
14. Bob Dylan
15. Sarah McLachlan
16. Belle & Sebastian
17. Aimee Mann

My tastes have changed so much, it kind of hurts to leave out my old standbys.

U2
Rufus Wainwright
Ryan Adams
Bruce Springsteen
Ben Folds
Radiohead
Dropkick Murphys
The Beatles
Tom Waits
Elvis Costello

Honorable mention - The Clash, Kanye West, Beck, Nick Cave, Oasis, Weezer, Led Zeppelin, PJ Harvey, White Stripes, Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Prince, Beastie Boys, Social Distortion, silverchair, Placebo, The Pogues, Scissor Sisters, Morrissey, . . .

In no particular order.. or disorder.. just a list.. well. okay the first three are about equal and then after that it's a free for all.

U2
Garnet Rogers
Rammstein
Katatonia
Children of Bodom
Green Day
Live
Stan Rogers
Sepultura
Elvis

U2
Bloc Party
Muse
Dredg
Radiohead

U2
The Beatles
The Killers
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Keane
Arcade Fire
The White Stripes
Jimi Hendrix
Coldplay
The Police

This is looking at music over a continuum, so I guess I'm giving U2 a pass, post-1997, and giving other, slightly newer bands the benefit of the doubt. For some reason, this decade has apparently been a lot crueler to Beck than to U2; I couldn't say why...

1) The Beatles
2) U2
3) The Velvet Underground
4) Talking Heads
5) Radiohead
6) Super Furry Animals
7) Depeche Mode
8) The Boss
9) The Hold Steady (can I just lump in Lifter Puller, here, too...?)
10) Beck

No particular order:

The Beatles
U2
Led Zeppelin
Aerosmith
Pink Floyd
Beck
Radiohead
David Bowie
Steely Dan
The Kinks

Hope this doesn't sound patronizing, but I'm so proud to see that.

You know, I was hunting around You Tube for archival Steely Dan stuff, and stumbled across a Michel Gondry(!)-directed video for one of Donald Fagen's solo songs, which wasn't featured on the Criterion Collection Gondry video compilation DVD for some reason. Must be one of his first videos. It's pretty funny and creative (for 1993), and while it's technically solo Fagen, the song was written with and produced by Walter Becker, so for all practical purposes it's Steely Dan material.

I don't know, Church of Scientology, maybe? Though I liked Sea Change well enough.

This decade was even crueler to R.E.M., in my opinion, and they can't blame it on a cult.

It's been the cruelest most of all to Axl Rose, who's been shooting blanks for, what, almost 15 years now?

EXCLUDING Solo artists (including Springsteen, since he may or may not count...I'll just leave him out.)

1. Arcade Fire
2. Radiohead
3. U2
4. R.E.M.
5. Talking Heads
6. Wilco
7. The Beatles
8. The Flaming Lips
9. The Who
10. Pixies

1. Porcupine Tree
2. The Shadows
3. Pure Reason Revolution
4. U2
5. Agalloch
6. Crowded House
7. Joy Division
8. The Chills
9. Anathema
10. Alcest

A list of honourable mentions would go on for days.

Oh yeah...I love that song, but don't remember the video off the top of my head. Kamakiriad was OK, but Nightfly is one of my favorite albums, period. Aja is in my top 5 all-time. Fagen is a genius.

I'd love to hear Lance critique the production quality of Aja.

I don't know if there's a better-produced album. Ever. Considering the year it came out, it should sound way more dated than it actually does.
