Week 31

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.

UK, Xfactor boost for :

67 (69) 18 Singles up to ~3k (~135k sold so far this year)
63 (re) WOWY up over 50% to ~4k (has now sold ~125k in the download era, since '05)

But sadly that is it as No Line & Crazy both inevitably crash out of top 200

I have to say I'd expected this album to be higher in the USA this week. U2 had played SNL on the Saturday, plus the ongoing tour.

So far in 2009, there are only 4 albums released during 2009 that have been able to sell 1,000,000 or more copies in the United States:

01 - 1,554,986 - HANNAH MONTANA: THE MOVIE - Soundtrack
02 - 1,461,469 - RELAPSE - Eminem
03 - 1,169,497 - THE E.N.D. (THE ENERGY NEVER DIES) - Black Eyed Peas
04 - 1,016,371 - NO LINE ON THE HORIZON - U2

With only 3 months to go in the year, this list is unlikely to get much bigger, and it does not appear that any 2009 releases will be achieving multi-platinum status before the end of 2009.

Do you trust these numbers more than the World Chart? That one has NLOTH at about 3.7M if I recall. I always felt that chart was more accurate (even though it too is an estimate), because during a time when NLOTH was clearly rising across Europe and holding steady in the U.S., it would report major drops in sales. This didn't make sense.

What does that chart say about NLOTH and other albums this year?

I trust the mediatraffic chart because its estimates are more conservative and regardless of the actual sales levels, I think the album positions are correct which is really the more important thing to look at than whether the album has sold 3.4 million or 3.7 million.

The list above is just what I have added from what is posted on the top 40. Mediatraffic does keep track of albums that drop out of the top 40, and I have seen indications that its up to 3.45 million in sales on the mediatraffic chart, although I can't confirm that. Mediatraffic will release all the results with their year end chart.
