NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- U2 had the Super Bowl halftime stage all to itself, and the Irish rockers delivered a moving tribute to America and the victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Lead singer Bono walked onto the field with a slow, shoulder-wagging swagger, singing the group's recent hit, Beautiful Day, as he climbed onto the point of a pink, heart-shaped catwalk that surrounded the stage.

As the first song wound down, a giant screen scrolled the names of victims in the attacks, and the group broke into the 1980s hit, Where the Streets Have No Name.

The names also reflected in overlapping patterns across the stands, which were dark, save for the countless camera flashes.

Unlike glitzy halftime shows of the past, the effects were limited to standard strobe lights. But all attention was on Bono anyway, who pulled back his lapel to reveal an American flag to the roars of the crowd.

...

Producers said most of the musical performers prerecorded their sound tracks to reduce the possibility of technical problems. However, U2, played live.

From The New York Post:

PATRIOTS WON - AS DID PATRIOTS WHO WATCHED THIS THRILLER
By ADAM BUCKMAN

February 4, 2002 -- HOW fitting that the most patriotic Super Bowl ever would
be won by a team called the Patriots.

Glimpses of New England fans costumed as Minutemen in the stands of the
Louisiana Superdome were just some of the all-American images seen during
a game that, for sheer excitement, was probably the greatest Super Bowl ever
played.

I'll leave the final determination on the game's historical value to football experts,
but as a casual football fan, I just know that Super Bowl XXXVI was great fun
right up until the final seconds, when underdog New England won on a 48-yard
field goal.

It was a telecast whose high points greatly outnumbered the low.

Among the most memorable moments: Mariah Carey showing no signs of the
mental anguish that is said to be plaguing her these days as she sang a
note-perfect "Star-Spangled Banner"; a team of eight Budweiser Clydesdales
in a new commercial bowing their forelegs in unison before the skyline of New
York City; the interception and touchdown by New England's Ty Law; and then,
with 31 seconds left in the first half, David Patten's leaping end zone reception
that gave New England a commanding lead going into halftime.

And then came a halftime show like no other in the history of the Super Bowl.

U2, led by the world's most charismatic rock singer, Bono, brought the
Superdome crowd to its feet and then its knees as the band performed before a
giant banner with the names of those who perished in the Sept. 11 terrorist
attacks.

If there was ever a more moving spectacle during a Super Bowl telecast, I don't
remember it. But I'll likely remember Bono bounding around the oval stage at
Super Bowl XXXVI for years to come.

As for the rest of the telecast, most of the ballyhooed commercials introduced
during the game held little interest, except, of course, for the tireless Britney
Spears, who will stop at nothing to get us to drink Pepsi.

All of us, that is, except for NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue, who was caught
on camera drinking a Coke, which Fox sportscaster Pat Summerall cleverly
identified vaguely as "an American soda."

And for Pat, it was the last hurrah. He's breaking up with John Madden after 21
seasons. And with last night's game, Pat goes out with a bang.

These articles are great, but when did the stage morph into an oval?

Ah yes, the Post - you can't find a better piece of journalistic perfection!

Hey - did anyon else notice the commish drinking the Coke and Summerall calling it "an American soda?" Funniest part of the broadcast for me.

I missed that , I was too busy drinking too many "American beers"

My head hurts today

Viewership was high throughout Fox's broadcast Sunday, including a 40.7 rating for a halftime show featuring Irish rock band U2. That's more than six times the 6.2 rating NBC got for its attempt at halftime counterprogramming, a special edition of "Fear Factor" featuring scantily clad Playboy playmates doing stunts such as walking a tightrope between two buildings.

WoW U2 beat out playmates!

I wonder how many of the playmates know Adam, personally
