I don't think it's the song that's hyped up so much as the album of the same name. The other songs on the album are much better than the singles.

Yes, I realise that...but to think that people were saying that this should have won over Vertigo? Now I know I'm biased because I'm a U2 fan, but if I TRY to look at it objectively, Vertigo pisses all over American Idiot! I don't even think American Idiot is all that catchy. It's just your typical three chord Green Day song.
