I'm surprised this has averaged more than 3 given U2 fans unachievably high expectations.
I think this will grow on the general public after a few airplays.
Yeah, I would have expected lower (although maybe not that low ). Maybe in the 5-6 range.

I think the lyrics are kind of shitty like a lot of post-2000's U2 (don't yell at me, I'm not one of those "let's-hate-on-everything-post-2000" types), but I do like the dirtier tones, song structure, and Enoisms that are present. I'm not a huge fan of the song as a single, but I think that it still has a chance to grow on me in the context of the album. I gave it a 5 for now as it's a little too typical rock for my taste (sounds like U2 doing Muse), but there's still time for this one to grow on me.
Thank you for confirming my point that you have no idea what you're talking about.
I think it's a real clunker and will be the worst on the record.
I am interested though why the "love is like a lightbulb" lien would be one of the best ever
because, first of all, I think "lightbulb" is not a 'good' sounding word
and second of all the entire 'you're the light in my life' symbolism is older and more used than I dare to imagine
Yeah, that one pretty much backfired on him...
Oh, and stay in context, any 4 random words alone will proabably suck. (with exception to "the goal is soul"
Yes, this is a shitty lyric:
"love is like a lightbulb"
But this is fucking awsome:
I remember when we could sleep on stones.
Now we lie together in whispers and moans.
When I was all messed up and I heard opera in my head
Your love was a light bulb hanging over my bed.
I actually think its a great line. I know what you're saying about the symbolism being overused, but the context in which its used adds a slightly different dimension. When I hear that line, I always picture a shitty, derelict apartment with a bare light bulb hanging from the wire over a mattress. the bulb being the only real sense of life in the entire room. I think it was the choice of saying 'lightbulb' rather than just 'light' that conjures that image. Its the line in the song that always pulls me in.

Looks like the real world supports your theory. GOYB has now slipped down to #37 and #85 on itunes. To rub salt in the wounds, Coldplay's Viva La Vida (the single) is #32 on itunes and was released way back in may 2008. (I hate that song, by the way, but I included the information so people can see, barring an unlikely comeback, what a commercial failure this new U2 single is becoming.)
Trolling again? the real world? well lets see number 1 on over 4 itunes charts outside of america, or does that not count?
your loving posting everything negative about this song arent you? am sorry but the world does excist outside of america,
and p.s. the album is still in the top 5 on amazon.com (your countrys) on the back of the single.
Every musician knows that if you don't succeed in America, you don't succeed. In the countries you;ve pointed out, it probably takes only 50,000 copies to go platinum. With the cost of marketing/promotion, you need to sell a significant amount to profit. America has always been U2's coveted demographic. If you can't win over America, you can't be the biggest band in the world.
I literally cannot believe so many of you are giving this song a 10/10.
It's as good or better than Streets? One? Pride? WOWY? Bad?
Really???
Thats BS, sorry dont succed in america then thats it? so no where else counts?, and as i said they havent even started the promotion, and your calling it a commercial flop, what a load of bollocks.
27 people gave it a 1/10, which I think is equally reactionary and ridiculous.
Single sales will probably go up again once the video comes out and there is a bit more promotion as so far the band have done very little....and to be honest why does anyone give a shit how well it sells? It will do well enough in itself, whatever charts its top of is really neither here nor there for me, since most artists I listen to struggle to get on the Billboard 100 anyway.
i'm talking about the single GOYB being a flop. when the album drops, billboard will tell us the tale of US sales.
Remember what forced the Spice Girls to retire the first time? Dismal US sales figures for their last (pre-comeback) album. Maybe you didn't know that.
Agreed.
NINETY-TWO people either think this is the best song U2's ever made (no, it's not - that's not opinion, that's a motherfucking FACT) or the worst (I've got at least a dozen songs I can name that instantly come to mind that are worse).
What the hell is the matter with you people?!?
