From what I've heard it's more relaxed & free flowing. It would seem too good to be true to just walk on up an hour or so before U2 is set to play though.

Yep....the main stage is usually located in a large field. People will stake out their spots from early in the day, so you'll need to get there in the morning if you want to be closer to the stage. It's possible to trade off with people to watch your spot, and leave a blanket/towel, but once the area near the stage gets taken, it's pretty much impossible to sneak your way in at the last minute.
Also, since bands will be performing on the main stage all day long, it's not as if you won't have music to listen to while waiting for U2, who would be the last group on, somewhere around 5:00. JazzFest is usually over by 7:00, before it gets too dark.
