"Dance" is the only track that I'd agree should be a little bit shorter, only towards the end. That opening drum bit leading into the synth-'splosion though? Probably the best moment of the album. Risky move, I'd say.
Oh COBL! Re: my profile comment malarky, no Splendour for me sadly. Just don't have that kind of money and my parents aren't about to stake me for a concert. Probably won't even make it to an LCD/HC sideshow given they're interstate
The Doors kinda suck.
You've never heard Here Come The Warm Jets??
Walk, don't run and get a hold of that shit. Seriously.
Quite honestly, it's all anyone needs from them.
And then there's the organ. I fucking hate organs.
Like you guys have said, yeah, I really only like a handful of their songs. And they're the ones that you always hear on classic rock stations. "Roadhouse Blues" is probably my favorite song of theirs. I don't hate them by any means, though. Just not a big fan.
okay, and the eagles too...
Yeah, this is my primary issue with them: their songs simply weren't very good, for the most part. I enjoy about a dozen of their songs, spread out over, what, six albums? That's pathetic for a band pitched as an unassailable, genius rock monolith. On top of that, I never thought they had as much talent as a band like Cream or The Who, who could take a simple blues cover and elevate it to a mindblowing degree. The Doors just never had that sort of power.
This is a fair criticism, and again it's about the fans more than the band themselves. There are plenty of other artists who only have a handful of classic songs to their names and are totally revered while not derided as often and Morrison and Co. And it should be noted that the Best Of that everyone has is a TWO disc set, and there's not much filler on it. Even if none of those six studio albums are flat-out masterpieces (ironically I'd probably take L.A. Woman, their big finale, over any of the others) that's a pretty great roster of standout tracks.
And more importantly: those great Doors songs couldn't have come from anyone else. They were a very original act, and an important/definitive one from that time period, for better or worse. I would never put them on the same level as a band like The Who, though while Cream was more talented as well, but they certainly weren't anywhere close to worthy of a 2-disc Best Of.
Now, let's lock the Doors on this discussion.
but they have far more songs I like than most other '60's or early '70's bands (Rolling Stones, The Who, etc).
