I have always considered them Rock. If you wanted to be more specific, I would say Light Rock or Alternative Rock.

'Alternative' rock is not a phrase that's regularly used in the UK, and I don't think they do in Ireland either, so I guess the band themselves have never considered themselves anything other than just Rock.
But I take your point about their style changing.
