Ok, so I thought I’d further delve into this notion that U2 aren’t quite up there with the Stones yet. And yes, I’m aware that the notion is not one supported by the majority of this board – but I thought I'd share how I explain it when I am confronted by friends with this thought. In recent years we’ve had the release of 40 Licks from the Stones, spanning their entire 40 year career in 36 songs plus 4 new ones (one of which was a single, “Don’t Stop” with very ‘moderate’ exposure). After only 25, and using only tracks that I think are a sure bet, I believe we have our 40 Licks quite handily with room to spare. I’m sure I’m not the first to address this, so apologies if this is redundant. Also, as a disclaimer, I am not hugely fluent with all of the RS catalogue, and I suspect there were some things left off 40 Licks that fans were hoping to have on there, so please forgive any ignorance I display here. See what ya think:

I Will Follow
Out Of Control
Sunday Bloody Sunday
New Year’s Day
Pride (In The Name Of Love)
The Unforgettable Fire
Bad
Where The Streets Have No Name
I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For
With Or Without You
Desire
Angel Of Harlem
When Love Comes To Town
All I Want Is You
Even Better Than The Real Thing
One
Until The End Of The World
The Fly
Mysterious Ways
Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me
Stay (Faraway, So Close)
Miss Sarajevo
Discotheque
Staring At The Sun
Gone
Sweetest Thing
Beautiful Day
Stuck In A Moment
Elevation
Walk On
Electrical Storm
Vertigo
All Because Of You
3 more likely: Sometimes You Can’t Make It On Your Own
City Of Blinding Lights
Original Of The Species (just my guesses – I’d love LPOE, but hey)
Guaranteed new material of some kind (standard fare)

Other very real possibilities: October (on Best Of)
Bullet The Blue Sky
Numb (on Best Of)
Lemon
The First Time (on Best Of)
Kite
Hands That Built America

You could make a mild case for other released tunes:

Two Hearts Beat As One
Wild Horses
Last Night On Earth
Please
The Ground Beneath Her Feet
Mercy (if it ever shows up as and A-side in some form due to interference outcry)

(and the myriad of other songs many of us think are standouts: ASOH, RTSS, etc)

That’s 36 already recorded in the ‘most likely’ group – same as on RS’ 40 Licks, and another 6-12 other possibilities (if I’m forgetting things I’m sure you’ll all let me know very quickly :yikes: ).

So there you have it – we already have to get rid of some amazing tunes that are completely viable to be part of a Best Of (not just the ones that fans like us hold dear, but were never singles, etc). That’s 25 years – can you imagine how hard it would be to squeeze in 15 more years of material if they were to last for 40? That’s my take anyway…let the music speak for itself!

IMO U2 is better than the Stones - when was the last time Stones released a really good album?

It doesn't matter "when" the Stones last released a great album. They made "Exile on Main Street", "Let It Bleed", & "Sticky Fingers" 3 of the greatest records in rock. Every self-respecting rock fan NEEDS these 3 records.

I agree with Mr Brau on this one. The Stones were one of the first great rock bands. They were pioneers along with the Beatles. They made great albums for about 20 years before some of their work seemed to drop off. U2 are just beyond that and they appear to still be making great music, we will see if it continues. I think U2 could and probebly will go down in rock history as one of the greats, but only time will tell. My point is The Stones ARE one of the greats currently.

Honestly though its like comparing apples to oranges for me. You could add Bruce to this discussion as well. Again, apples to oranges. I dont really think there needs to be a versus or one is better than the other. They are all very different and they are all GREAT!

I completely agree with the apples to oranges comment and please don't think I'm trying to take anything away from The Stones. I was mainly referring to the frequent ranking of the greatest bands ever by commercial publications and personal websites (which I agree is silly, yet rather enticing to examine). Often you see the Beatles and Rolling Stones in the top 3 (mixed in with Zeppelin and Floyd, etc.), but U2 rarely crack anyone's top 5. Was merely a comparison to say "Look, U2 is certainly worthy of being up there". Plus, it was just fun to write out the list.

I'm sorry but this deserves a big fat ---->

I'm glad I was able to see both of these bands live, because that's where they are truly magnificent.

U2 have made more consistatly good albums then the stones have ever made....the rolling stones keep putting albums out so they can go on tour and make money off their old material...pretty pathetic really.

Absolutely! "Exile.." is in my personal top ten:

1. “Revolver,” the Beatles
2. “Exile On Main Street,” the Rolling Stones
3. “The Joshua Tree,” U2
4. “London Calling” the Clash
5. “Bringing It All Back Home” Bob Dylan
6. “Europe ‘72″ the Grateful Dead
7. “OK Computer” Radiohead
8. “Ziggy Stardust & The Spiders From Mars” David Bowie
9. “Pet Sounds” - the Beach Boys
10. “Love Power Peace - Live @ The Olympia Theater in Paris” James Brown

Nice list.

About U2 vs Stones you really can't compare the two. Give U2 about 20 more years first.

The Stones were there when rock started, the members were anyway. They're an amazing, amazing band. I've heard criticism about them touring well into their 50s and 60s, but why criticize that?

Incredible longevity, and you know what? They have a back catalogue of a HUGE amount of songs, not to mention what they haven't released.

For example, when sifting through their back tapes for a song to work on, someone found "Start Me Up" done in its original reggae form, and in the middle of like 70 takes of this, they found 1 rock and roll version with Keith and Charlie fooling around. From that one take they overdubbed the rest and Start Me Up (classic song) was born.

I love U2, but the Stones are a better and bigger band then they are in the annals of history. Have you ever seen them play live? These guys know each other so well, the interplay between Keith and Ronnie, the way they change little things in the songs and see if each other can keep up - it's priceless. These guys are pure musicians and performers like U2, and it's amazing.

Just give U2 another decade or two and they can then begin to garner the same respect in music history as the Beatles, Stones, Floyd, etc. :)

I must be like the only person alive who think the Rolling Stones are THE most overrated band in history.

Please, listen to the following albums, then report back:

Beggar's Banquet
Let It Bleed
Sticky Fingers
Exile On Main Street

If you still feel the same way, I'd be very much surprised, but interested to see your reasons.

Lancemc - you are.

The Stones, IMV, passed the overrated Beatles a long time ago. Jagger is one of the all-time live acts. The rhythm section of Watts-Wyman was superb. Toss in the craftsmanship of Richards on both guitar and lyric, and, well, you have arguably the greatest band ever...

Agree on your arguements on why the Stones were great, but must disgree with your assertion that the Beatles are overrated.

The Beatles as a unit were very special, and they have left us with a catalog that has become ubiqutious. I honestly can't imagine my life without Beatles music having been a part of it.

Agreed. There is no way the Beatles can be overrated. Along with Elvis, the Beatles ARE rock and roll.

I think The Rolling Stones are talented but they aren't my thing. I do really like The Beatles, more of their lastes stuff.;)

I like 70's rock n roll but I am not into the sqeeky guitars. The 70's rock n roll has great artists, but I am more into artists like, E.L.O., The Ramones, The Eagles, Earth Wind & Fire, The Cars, Hall & Oates, Steve Miller Band, and Aerosmith compared to the Rolling Stones.

As far as specific to the 90s, I like: Apples In Stereo, Blur, Oasis, Olivia Tremor Control, Neutral Milk Hotel, Phish, Beck, Belle & Sebastian, The Black Crowes, Counting Crows, Flaming Lips, Pavement, Travis, Wilco

Dipping into the 00's, you can add Coldplay, Badly Drawn Boy, The Hives, The White Stripes, New Pornographers, My Morning Jacket, The Shins, Destroyer, Sunshine Fix, Iron & Wine, and most recently, The Libertines, and Interpol
