The press has been really easy on this Administration.
The Iraq War
the lies that led to it
never got much scrutiny.
This whole Pat Tillman debacle
the way they covered it up
and the Administration played it like a harp
to their advantage.
His parents are outraged.
And the press is MIA.
The Bush/ Cheney machine just rolls on grinding up bodies for their political gain.

at the end of the day, most media outlets are not driven by ideology; they are driven by advertising sales.

Isn't it a great time to be alive? Everybody can have news tailored to their view, opinions, pet theories, .... I'm waiting for the Conspiracy News Network: "This just in--new documents discovered in the bottom of an old shoes box in the basement of the Pentagon prove that Martian Financed Swiss Communists were instrumental in the plot to assasinate JFK..."
Pick your opinion. Pick your leanings. Pick your party. There's a news outlet somewhere which will tell you that you are right, your choices are the only correct ones, and that everybody else is not only wrong, they will assuredly go to hell when they die, which (just to reassure you) should be sometime next Friday afternoon.
And the only major inconvenience it causes is making it a leetle bit harder to figure what the hell is going on.
Earnie Shavers said:It's not the bias that's the problem with Fox. Yes, all media leans one way or the other (to varying degrees) and Fox from day one has openly declared where it leans. Murdoch doesn't make his billions from being stupid. He makes them from seeing a market and exploiting it. He's always openly said that he saw an opening to go up against CNN with an entertaining, tabloid style, conservative/right leaning news channel so he took it. Essentially he saw the market to create the cable news equivalent of the New York Post to go up against the cable equivalent of the New York Times. If the winds were blowing the other way, Murdoch would just have happily created a left leaning channel. The guy just wants your money and he doesn't give a fuck about anything else.
The fact that it leans right doesn't bother me at all. I have no problem with INTELLIGENT right leaning news sources. I would think though that any conservative with half a brain wouldn't be that keen on Fox News either. They treat their viewers as if they have the IQ of a borderline monkey. For example, you STING and A_Wanderer in here, despite the fact that I disagree with both of you on just about everything, I would describe you as very intelligent conservatives, and I can't seriously see you two sitting down in front of Fox News and thinking "Now THIS is an excellent news source!" It's not the bias - which has been a part of journalism since the beginning of man - it's the crime they've committed against the presentation of news. Plenty of people take Fox News as the gospel. That's wrong.
verte76 said:Oh, hell, aren't all journalists biased? Some are liberal, some are conservative, some are centrist, hell, maybe some are socialist and others might sympathize with the Ku Klux Klan.........my God, that's scary. We all have our biases and sympathies. Are journalists any different? There is no objective truth in politics, there are only opinions.

ImOuttaControl said:Saying Fox News and Michael Moore are essentially the same thing is one of the dumbest things I've heard in a while.
Fox News reports the news with a conservative bias. Oh well, there is plenty of left-leaning media out there.

Maybe that stuff flies on other politics forums, but not in FYM.
And yes, I would say the same thing if a lefty posted that Republicans should die.

this is precisely the misconception that's out there that the quote that kicked off this thread should put to rest.
yes, the media is filled with bias, though for the life of me i cannot find much left wing bias (i can find lots of ad sales drive bias), however FoxNews has a specific *agenda* that it seeks to drive home with each and every broadcast, piece of reporting, and certainly with each and every single personality driven "talk" (more like "scream") show it has on in prime time.
there is *no* liberal equivalent to FoxNews on TV. none. Fox stands alone in pushing propaganda as news.
Earnie Shavers said:Yeah, Fox report with a conservative bias, just as a lot of other media report with a left leaning bias. I have no problem with that, none at all. I wish all media were straight down the middle, but it's never been that way and it never will.
It's not the bias.
And yes, I think Michael Moore himself is the perfect equivalent of most of the personalities I've seen on Fox News, and his style and purpose are very, very similar to those used on Fox News.
