My understanding is, it's only a claddaugh if it shows two hands, the heart & the crown. (They represent: Friendship, Love & Loyalty).
I just bought a sterling & gold claddaugh for my husband this year & gave it to him on our 13th anniversay in February, to replace the dinky little plain gold wedding band we originally bought him, back when we were poor. I was really touched by how proud he is of his new ring -- he shows it to anybody who'll sit still!
I met Adam in November - he had on a beautiful diamond and emerald shamrock ring - I asked him if I could see it - he said of course! I got to hold his hand.
