I think I have this whole Buckeye thing down.

Love the Bucks, but almost more important to hate Michigan. Cherish beating them, love it when they get upset by a Division 1-AA school, point and laugh at people walking down the street wearing Michigan gear (not really). Yada, yada.

Yet today I pump my fist wildly every time they get a first down in the meaningless Capital One Bowl against Florida.

F Florida.

Go Blue.

They really need to change the NCAA rule that a play called down by contact is not reviewable. They review everything else including whether the cheerleaders dye their hair or are natural blondes, why is that an exception? An official screened from the ball rules a play down, and thats the end of it...makes no sense.

Right on! Fight on! but I still hate Brent Assburger...

First set of downs, it was clear that Fred Davis was down when the ball came loose and the first thing he does is call it a "controversy!" Fat Little Man!

PS...SC opens at Virginia (some of us MAY be there!) and then home to Ohio State...and then right into the PAC-10...no cupcakes for the Trojans...see you in August!

Could it be any more obvious that a playoff system is needed? All of these games were obvious mismatches when they were announced, and they are all turning into blowouts. What does any of this prove?

If you aren't going to go to a playoff system, why not just at least make sure the best teams play each other, these blowouts are just terribly boring to watch.

Like the one in progress on FOX...
Georgia 24
Hawaii 3
at the half....

The bowl games aren't intended to "prove" anything. It's just another game for the teams to play, have some fun, and make some money. I thought most of them seemed like good matchups coming in, except for the SC-Illinois game.

Next week's game between OSU and LSU should be another entertaining game; the only problem with it is that the powers that be have determined that these are The Best Two Teams in the Country and that they are playing in the National Championship Game, which is far from clear.

You nailed it. The powers that be decided that they wanted LSU/OSU for the national championship, so that's what they voted for. I can sort of see LSU getting in there, but Ohio State had absolutely no business not playing the final week and getting bumped up to #1 (though I'm a bitter Georgia fan; either UGA should have been bumped up to #2 for the same reason OSU made the leap, or OSU should have fallen a spot in the rankings like the Bulldogs did. Is a little consistency too much to ask for?) Even then, I'm not too keen on LSU getting a title shot after losing the #1 ranking twice in one season.

Oklaholma got screwed. Mizzou got screwed. Georgia got screwed. Illinois shouldn't have been in the Rose Bowl. And I hope LSU wins in a blowout for the same reason I wanted Georgia to destroy Hawaii -- they're facing an overrated opponent with a great record because of an easy regular-season schedule. Seriously, the Buckeyes have played nobody of worth this season. When they did, they lost.

Wow, how good did the Mighty Trojans look yesterday...

Ohio State...p'shaw....LSU...we'd beat them in regulation...

Georgia....Oklahoma...those are two teams that I think might give USC a run for their money...but right now...there's no better college football team...Fight On!!!!

I earlier wrote that I wished SC would play Georgia...maybe it should've been Illinois vs. Hawaii in the Sugar; SC versus Georgia at the Rose Bowl...that would have been good stuff!

But yes, they looked awesome..I just wish Pete would teach these guys a little more discipline re: the personal fouls and unsportsmanlike conduct...JMO.

I hate seeing a great play unfold and then the yellow FLAG symbol all over the screen.

Maybe West Virginia shouldn't have lost to South Fla AND 30 point underdog Pitt.

Its just been such a wacky year...boy imagine a playoff this year, and the winners of the Sugar Bowl and Fiesta playing in one semi final, you'd be saying wow that Georgia/WVU game next week looks like a great game after the way they played in the quarterfinals...same for USC (after they beat a worthy opponent like maybe VA Tech, not Illinois)vs whoever, lets just say LSU for argument if they beat tOSU...you'd say...wow what a great 2 games coming up...one can only dream.

Oklahoma beats Missouri not once, but twice this year. And they'll probably finish behind them in the polls. That makes sense, right?

I agree. I've always liked Carroll but lost a little respect after all the unsportsmanlike conduct calls.

It appears that Mendenhall is going to the draft. It'll be interesting to see where and when he is taken.

again why i just can't get into college football. honestly... unless you have a direct rooting interest in one of the teams, who cares? there's nothing to play for.

This is false. What you mean, is, for you, there's nothing to root for. For the schools, there's plenty to play for.

by the herm edwards "you plaaaay to winnnnn the gaaaaame" theory, yes... there's always something to play for.

for the schools themselves, yes... there's always millions of dollars in revenue for them to take in from the bowl.

in reality, a handful of teams picked by no-nothing idiot douchebags like woody paige and dan lebatard before the season even begins have a true, legit shot at competing for a national championship, while teams like kansas need things to go absolutely perfect to even be in the conversation, let alone have an actual shot at winning the whole thing.

it's a joke, a sham, a mockery, a shamaramamockery, and i can't take it seriously until they get a legit playoff system.

mangino does not approve :tsk:

and Kansas may finish ahead of both even though they lost to Missouri.

it's a shame the NFL doesn't go to a BCS type system....

What life would be like if the NFL was part of the Bowl Championship Series.

One week into January, we're getting ready for two weeks of NFL bowl action. Can't you just feel the excitement as we get ready for six games over the next two weeks?

As usual, there is plenty of controversy surrounding the bowls. Cowboys fans are upset that they have been shut out of the Bud Bowl championship game, but the Cowboys late-season slide allowed the Colts to jump ahead of them in both the coaches poll and the computer rankings. So get ready for our fifth Colts-Patriots title game in the past eight years. Some fans are getting a little tired of that matchup, but CBS is happy, because they can sell the matchup of Peyton Manning vs. Tom Brady and Tony Dungy vs. Bill Belichick.

The Colts were the preseason No. 1 based on their Super Bowl win over the Patriots last year, but the Patriots passed them in the polls after beating them on Nov. 4 and never relinquished the top spot on their way to an undefeated regular season. For a while it appeared the Cowboys would snag the second spot in the title game. They were ranked No. 2 after the Colts loss to the Patriots, and they maintained that until losing to the Eagles in early December and a lackluster win over the Panthers a next week. That was just the opening the Colts needed to jump back into the No. 2 spot.

So once again, there is controversy surrounding the Bud Bowl. But as NFL commissioner Roger Goodell points out frequently, that controversy means that people are talking about the NFL. And going to a playoff system would punish the bowl partners, who have been a fixture since the 1920s.

Cynics might point out that without such controversy, college football has no problems getting attention and garners significantly higher ratings and interest for its 16-team playoff system (something that was developed in the 1967). There is no bigger sporting event than December madness, a four-week orgy of football that finishes with the national championship game that is as much a part of New Year's as Dick Clark and a morning hangover.

Cowboys fans anger at missing out on the title game grew even more when they didn't even end up in the Grandaddy of the bowl games: the Viagra Rose Bowl. The Rose Bowl traditionally matches a team from the NFC North and the AFC North, and the bowl stuck with the tradition, setting up a Packers-Steelers bowl game that is guaranteed to sell plenty of tickets since both Steelers and Packers fans travel so well. While it might not be the match-up fans were asking for, and the Steelers' late-season slide remove some of the luster from the game, tradition carries more weight than rankings when it comes to the Rose Bowl.

Things kick off on Saturday with the Vikings versus the Cardinals in the Fathead Bowl in San Diego. They're expecting a big crowd in San Diego thanks to the presence of Adrian Peterson, although a matchup of two 8-8 teams isn't exactly a matchup of greats. On Sunday we'll get to watch the Browns (in their first bowl berth in six years) face off against the Redskins in the Heinz 57 Peach Bowl at the Georgia Dome, and the Bucs vs. the Chargers in the Outback Bowl at Tampa's home stadium.

Eli Manning will face off against Vince Young on Monday night in the Fiesta Bowl, and the Cowboys will take on the Seahawks (in a rematch of last year's Orange Bowl) in this year's Sugar Bowl on Jan. 12, while the Rose Bowl will wrap up next weekend's action on Jan. 13.

The Cowboys' complaints aren't even the biggest controversy surrounding the bowls. Jaguars fans are livid that they were shut out of the bowl games, even though Jacksonville finished with an 11-5 record and was one of the hottest teams in the league. But when the Titans were selected for the Fiesta Bowl, the Jags chances dropped to zero, because BCS rules prohibit three teams from one division landing bowl bids. The Titans edged the Jaguars for a bowl berth because they have more recognizable players (namely Vince Young), but even more importantly because they have more fans than the Jaguars to buy bowl tickets.

Jaguars fans may complain, but as BCS chairman pointed out, the team's tarps over empty seats at their home stadium make it pretty clear they won't sell 40,000 tickets a thousand miles from Jacksonville.

But all of that is just the warm-up for the Bud Bowl. Colts-Patriots, white hats vs. the black hats. Some fans may be tiring of seeing the same title pairing time and time again, but they've been the best two teams during the regular season year in and year out, so fair is fair.

While the ratings may never equal NCAA football, they are pretty good, and hey tradition and the Rose Bowl parade are important, so stop complaining about wanting to see a playoff system in the NFL.
