U2 Frontman Bono Undergoes Surgery - ABC News

CANNES, France (Reuters) - U2 lead singer Bono has undergone emergency surgery on his back in a Munich hospital after being injured while preparing for the next leg of the band's world tour, a spokesperson said Friday.

The 50-year-old from Ireland had been preparing for the North American leg of the "360 Degree" world tour which is due to kick off in Salt Lake City on June 3.

"Bono has today undergone emergency back surgery for an injury sustained during tour preparation training," his spokesperson said.

"He was admitted to a specialist neuro surgery unit in a Munich hospital.

"Bono will spend the next few days there, before returning home to recuperate. Once his condition has been assessed further, a statement will be made regarding the impact on forthcoming tour dates."

After North America, the tour was scheduled to travel to Turin in Italy on August 6. It was not immediately clear how badly the injury would disrupt the group's tour.

The tour earned around $109 million in 2009, according to music journal Billboard, making it the world's most lucrative, and the publication also predicted it would end up being the highest-grossing tour in history.

By some measures the band, with hits like "Sunday Bloody Sunday" and "Where the Streets Have No Name," is the world's most successful. They have sold more than 150 million records, according to unofficial estimates.

that's the fastest update u2.com has ever had...

Following Bono's unexpected back surgery earlier today, Live Nation confirmed that the U2360° tour launch previously scheduled for June 3rd in Salt Lake City has been postponed. U2 fans with tickets to the June 3rd event are encouraged to retain tickets until updated show information can be provided.

Fingers crossed Bono's ok - hopeful that it isn't overly serious as Paul McGuinness talks more about the show postponement rather than Bono's condition.

"New Material" mentioned in the statement as a side note, first things first here's to Bono's recovery.

WoW !! This is horrible news. Back injuries are a very tricky business.

But, I'm sure Bono's got access to some of the best doctors on the planet and hopefully they can patch him up well.

doesn't bode well for ticket holders to the next leg of the tour. I guess things are about to be pushed back significantly.

Wish the B-Man a speedy recovery.

Poor guy just turned 50 and all of a sudden he injures his back.

All of a sudden? Hell no, Bono's had back problems for YEARS.

But never this bad! I remember him needing shots before being able to perform some Vertigo dates, but it was never this bad. I hope he recovers soon. :(

neuro surgeon? this means he injured his spine... emergency spine surgeries aren't a good thing...

That's what I'm thinking. Neurosurgery is spinal. My daughter had spinal surgery in December and she was in the hospital for a week. The surgeon didn't release her to even play softball for four months.

Poor Bono......

Back problems are absolutely horrible. Surgery is always the last resort. I pray that everything goes well for him.

Speaking from experience, IF, and we don't know, we are merely speculating here, IF there is spinal cord involvement, he is in good hands. You want a neuro(surgeon) there. They are the BEST!
You don't want "just" a ortho, while there is nothing wrong with that, a neurosurgeon is the best choice.
I will be praying for Bono's quick recovery.

my mom's recovery took 6+ weeks and it was not a fun time, she had a spinal fusion type of thing I REALLY hope that's not what he had to have done.
she had to sleep a certain way, couldn't twist or turn, many, many restrictions.

A friend of mine had to have several disc removed from her back and steel rods were place. To keep the spine from collapsing. Recovery time for her, was six months.

Yeah, I'd rather more dates be postponed than he try to get himself back out there before he's really ready. :(
