Exclusive: U2 Tour To Kick Off March 1

Look for U2 to start its world tour on March 1 in Florida in support of its new Interscope album, "How To Dismantle an Atomic Bomb," the band's manager Paul McGuinness tells Billboard.

"We'll play approximately 35 shows in the arenas in the spring in the U.S., McGuinness says. U2 will then play 30 stadium shows across Europe, return to North America for another 35-date arena swing and the proceed to Japan and Australia.

Rumors have circulated that potential openers include Snow Patrol and the Scissor Sisters. McGuinness said no decision has been made, but added "We love Snow Patrol. Their producer, Jacknife Lee, also worked on U2's album and they're Irish. There's a close connection."

The upcoming trek will be promoted by Clear Channel Entertainment's TNA International, which is spearheaded by president Arthur Fogel. U2's 2001 tour, also promoted by Fogel, grossed $104 million from 106 shows worldwide, according to Billboard Boxscore.

Continuing the move toward a more rock-driven approach emphasized on 2000's "All That You Can't Leave Behind," the new set is front-loaded with a host of satisfyingly straightforward tracks that should thrill U2 fans. Highlights include the chiming, strident "City of Blinding Lights," the powerful Edge showcase "All Because of You" and the emotive, atmospheric "Miracle Drug," where Bono scales the heights of his vocal register.

First single "Vertigo" is in third week at No. 1 on Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks chart.

I will definitly go to all the Philly shows. And my sister lives in Denver so i am planning to swing way out there when the come around.

Agh! Soooooooo anxious to hear the schedule... My birthday is in March, so it would be ridiculously amazing if I could see them the day of my birthday.

And opener in Florida? I may seriously fly down there. You can fly from Detroit to Ft. Lauderdale for $100.00 or so. Agh!

*Happy dance*

Hey so what's up with only 35ish shows on both NA legs? They played around 50 last time around. That could mean a lot less shows in major markets (like Boston and LA) and possibly some smaller venues left off (like Sports Arena in San Diego)...

Also, why not try some stadiums in the US too? Or do you think they will?

JeffD

all because of you, i am...

And again will they underplay Europe... :sigh: I fear many markets will again be left out, just like on the Elevation Tour (when they also played only around 32 dates in Europe and 80 in the USA).

I hope I will get tickets...

This sort of attitude really pisses me off!!

70 SHOWS????????????????????????????
Just how many do you want!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just think of all us in all of Europe WITH A PALTRY 30 SHOWS AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well U2 you've done it again!!! :madspit:

Easy folks, they will be playing more shows than this most likely. They initially only count 1 show in most markets and 2 shows in the major markets (IE New York, Chicago, Boston). Then they add on to those. So there will be more than the number indicated they just dont announce the additionals until first couple sellout in each market. I dont think the 35 totals include the additional dates even though they tentatively plan to have them.

Also, I wouldnt say South America is out of the question. If it happens though it wont be until 2006 obviously. U2 are not going to announce plans on that at this point because they dont want to commit to it and/or disappoint the fans down there if they change their minds.

yeah, you're right. How can they play 70 shows!! in NA and just 35 shows in Europe? Can't believe that. It's the same every time.... They can easily sell out 100 shows in Europe...

It's sad that we are not on their inmediate plans... but when they came with PopMart, we ( I ) knew it like in july or august.. so I'm not that worried

but still... if they don't come on down here, the only place besides spain where the unos-dos-tres- catorce thing could work, I'll be very sad

Cant wait for some offical dates...
which would be annonced when, prehaps mid-December...Tickets on sale early January?

so i can start planning my trip.

Think of people in non-Western/North Europe with 0 shows, too. Or South America.

Can we safely say they're done playing stadiums in US? :hmm: This will be the second time around they didn't do it.

I will believe this when the official annoucement says so.

Europe only gets 3 shows less than Elevation time, while US gets 10 or so less. Australia and Japan obviously get more, they might even add S. America.

Third, who's to say they might not play a second time around in Europe?

(whoever asked I think they're playing 10 shows in Australia)
