Better Odds for U2

By Christine Sams

Ever since Bono, lead singer of U2, phoned horse trainer Lee Freedman to congratulate him on the cup win, the music industry has been buzzing with rumours that the band may be resurrecting plans for an Australian tour.

Just when U2 fans had all but given up hope, the statement by Bono that he'd like to see the horse when he's next in Australia prompted a surge of speculation about a visit by U2.

It doesn't hurt that one of the Irish supergroup's tour managers was the person in Melbourne who handed the mobile phone (with Bono on the other end of the line) to Freedman. Just why one of the band's professional staff was in Melbourne is anyone's guess but speculation rests on continuing negotiations with a major-league concert promoter.

The signs for an Australian tour by U2, which were so promising to begin with (with specific dates bandied around for the end of this year) have been shaky to say the least. The band opted to go for bigger tour dollars in the US instead and have since performed in other major territories including Europe.

Most local fans had already resigned themselves to not seeing Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen jnr performing songs from their latest album, How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb.

But just when it looked as though the band had forgotten Australia existed, one winning horse has made the odds of a visit from U2 look slightly more promising.
