Santana Music Something to Dance to

ASHTABULA, OHIO ? The sultry sounds of Carlos Santana, Sarah Vaughn, U2 and other popular artists will fill the air at the Ashtabula Arts Center next month, as Ballet Theatre Ashtabula presents its annual spring dance concert.

The show runs two weekends, May 7-9 and 14-16.

Called ?Surrender to Passion,? the program will include four new pieces set to the sultry and passionate music of Carlos Santana.

With a blend of congas, timbales, maracas, guitars and Latin rhythms, Santana?s music is a blend of rock ?n? roll, blues, Afro-Cuban rhythms and sensuous Latin flavor. His music has spanned five decades and has sold more than 50 million albums. Santana was inducted into the Rock ?n? Roll Hall of Fame in 1998.

Ballet Theatre Ashtabula will perform pieces choreographed to Santana?s ?Evil Ways,? which reached double platinum status in 1969? ?Oye Como Va,? which went quadruple platinum in 1970; and ?Smooth,? a recent collaboration by Santana and Matchbox Twenty?s Rob Thomas.

Shelagh Dubsky, AAC dance coordinator and artistic director of the program, chose Santana?s music because of his musical philosophy.

He has been quoted as saying, ?For me in playing, there are only two elements: emotion and grace.? Dubsky says it lends itself beautifully to dance.

In addition , there will also be pieces choreographed to such popular songs as U2s ?Discotheque,? and Sarah Vaughn?s ?Whatever Lola Wants, Lola Gets.?

The program will also include a sensuous guitar piece by Ottmar Liebert and a humorous piece set to a traditional piano rag. Another new ballet has been set to ?Diamond Music,? a piece of classical music which many will recognize as the background music for ?A Diamond is Forever? commercials on television.

Another new element to this year?s show is the introduction of works choreographed to live music. ?That Old Black Magic,? a classic favorite by Johnny Mercer, will be sung by Judy Robson of Geneva. Joshua Theilan, an Ashtabula resident who recently moved back to the area from New York City, will sing ?Lately,? by Mu Wonder.

?Surrender to Passion? will be performed May 7, 8, 9, 14, 15 and 16. Friday and Saturday shows begin at 7:30 p.m. and curtain for Sunday shows is 2 p.m. Tickets are $9 adults, $8 seniors, $7 students and $6 for children 12 and under. As a special promotion for Mother?s Day, audience members may bring their mothers to the show for free May 9.

Tickets are on sale at 964-3396.

Last year?s dance program was called ?Think Pink.?
