Parihaka hopeful of visit from Bono
Rock star Bono has been invited to Parihaka – and organisers believe there is a good chance he'll come.
U2's lead singer has been asked to speak at the Parihaka International Peace Festival in Taranaki between March 10 and 12, event manager Daniel Keighley said yesterday.
The Irish band is to play at Ericsson Stadium in Auckland on March 17 and 18, so Bono would be heading to New Zealand around that time.
According to the band's official website, they have no bookings for the Parihaka weekend, so the festival's hopes may well have some foundation. They hope to hear back from Bono in the next two weeks.
They hope his connection to former personal assistant Greg Carroll, who had links to Te Atiawa and other Taranaki and Wanganui iwi, may sway him to visit.
Carroll was killed by a drunk driver while riding a motorbike through Dublin in 1986.
Bono attended his tangi at Kai Iwi marae. Later he wrote the song One Tree Hill and dedicated the album Joshua Tree to Carroll.
If he accepted the invitation, Bono would be included as a peace forum speaker, but Mr Keighley would be happy if he decided to sing.
As part of the celebrations, Parihaka locals will perform a re-enactment of the day the Maori village, whose leaders were committed to non-violent resolution of land disputes, was attacked by Pakeha militia and armed police on November 5, 1881.
