New Album Discussion 10 - Songs of Sir, this is a Wendy's, durr

I’m posting too much but I’m genuinely shocked by how much love went into this.

Lol leaving Moment of Surrender off their album Songs of Surrender for the Surrender book… you have to give them credit, they never took the easy road I feel like this Ordinary Love is another song you could maybe imagine getting some play. And yeah Two Hearts is awesome

New Album Discussion 10 - Songs of Sir, this is a Wendy's, durr

Insofar as there is or should be a single, I feel like it’s Red Hill With the fuller kit and horns it feels like they put a little more into it, too… the single Red Hill almost was I hope they keep it up with the breezy retro guitars on the next record, it’s a nice vintage enough to be back in...

New Album Discussion 10 - Songs of Sir, this is a Wendy's, durr

Only in Disc 2 but I’m just really refreshed by how it feels much more like listening to them play music than the recent records… not even so much in terms of ‘intimacy’ but like people (mostly edge, but also Bono’s singing) are making semi-spontaneous choices based on what feels right, rather...

Songs of Songs, Books & Fat Puns - New Album Discussion #8

Something that's struck me from the audiobook so far is that the more recent lyrics sound much better to my ears as spoken word, in the context of his life story. I'm not sure this means I 'appreciate' SOI or SOE any more, as I don't think this means they work any better as song lyrics--I just...

Love Is Bigger Than Anything In Its Way appreciation thread

Jumping in to say I do think this was/is their best shot at a semi-hit. I see no reason why this song wouldn't be as good a background noise track at Target as any other. I say that in the nicest way possible. Fingers crossed.

Songs of Experience 36 - Now with 20% fewer acronyms

I think Andy Barlow might be my favorite U2 producer since the Eno+Lanois dream team. I love DangerMouse's work on "The Troubles" especially, too Eno+Lanois+Barlow+Mouse for Songs of Ascent, anyone?

Songs of Experience 36 - Now with 20% fewer acronyms

I played with Stapleton's Star Wars toys and watched his James Bond DVDs when I was a kid - fun fact from Kentucky

SOE 35 - it’s finally here, let the debate on how good/bad it is begin!

I can't control the impulse to talk about how actually good this album is. "Landlady" outro is still my favorite part, followed closely by "Little Things" outro. Just a powerhouse couple of songs. I would seriously have to reach back at least as far as Kite->IALW, and possibly further, to find...

SOE 35 - it’s finally here, let the debate on how good/bad it is begin!

I keep getting through the energy and emotion wringer that is SOL->Landlady, then forgetting I have LIBTAIIW and 13 to look forward to. Album has a deep bench.

Beautiful review, Headache. I agree re: most everything, minus finding it hard still not to hear Blackout as Bank of America Bono. Beautiful album.

SOE 35 - it’s finally here, let the debate on how good/bad it is begin!

Does anyone else feel like Bono became their adoptive father with this record? SOI had flashes of Wise Bono, but SOE feels to me like he's really assuming that role, and offering to kind of 'guardian' the listener. The warm, intimate vocals throughout, especially on the intro and outro, help...

SOE 35 - it’s finally here, let the debate on how good/bad it is begin!

Agreed. Acoustic significantly better, but I wish we'd heard a better version of that original idea. Still not sure about Tedder's songwriting contributions either, myself. Genuinely interested to see the song-by-song production credits for SOE. TBT's issues remind me a lot of EBW's (stiff...

Zoomerang's "It's about fucking time" is my favorite comment so far. :cute::sad:

SOE 34: If there is a leak, don't let it go unheard

Does anyone else detect an obvious-sounding overdub vox punch-in for "All my thoughts are so reckless" on "Little Things" outro? It's just possible it's an intentional vocal effect, but it sounds to my ears like a classic lazy edit. lol :applaud: Don't mind at all.

SOE 34: If there is a leak, don't let it go unheard

BOYH I might sub in for Blackout eventually. Could have been a cool late album reflective piece. My one complaint has settled into shape: I think the attempts to be politically relevant (GOOYOW verse 2, all of AS, most of Blackout) don't work nearly as well as the personal address to a...

SOE 34: If there is a leak, don't let it go unheard

The toms rumble/ key change/"Free yourself to be yourself" sequence is majorly badass at CDQ.

SOE 34: If there is a leak, don't let it go unheard

Last thought and I'll probably retire from forum cruising: Love is Bigger feels to me like they went for the "People Have the Power" thing: shameless 80s anthem uplift Nailed it.

SOE 34: If there is a leak, don't let it go unheard

I'm judging the SOE close differently from how I'd judge the rest, except maybe MLK. It just feels much more like a song made *as a closer* for this particular record than the typical U2 closers. MOTD, LIB, and Troubles are way better songs, I think, and are also appropriate last tracks. But...

SOE 34: If there is a leak, don't let it go unheard

Since it was mentioned above, I have noticed a pretty immediate shift in my thinking re: U2 and their career going forward. Based on the SOE singles, I was really hoping this was the last try for a 'big record.' I hoped for a kind of SOE->SOA ride off into the sunset plan. I still wouldn't...

Just dropping in to render my daily praise to Landlady  Every magic potion Every force in motion I was living our devotion To the lies we know are almost true  This is my favorite part of a U2 song since ATYCLB
