    Lights of Home

I think the ending is the best part, for a few reasons. One- the chord sequence is probably the most exciting on the album - the chord change on the "if only YOU could..." is the biggest goosebumps moment for me on the entire record. Two - Bono melts into the choir. The background voices take...

Songs of Experience vs Songs of Innocence

The production on SOE clinches it for me. That said, I miss the darker detours a la RBW, SLABT & The Troubles.

SOE Holdouts until 12/1- The End is Near

There's some good stuff here and the album sounds way more cohesive than the last 2 or 3, but, aside from the first 2 tracks and Red Flag Day, nothing really gets my heart racing. I was drawn to U2 in the first place because I never wanted to hear a chorus like the one in You're The Best Thing...

The Little Things That Give You Away - Appreciation Thread

IMO Edge's playing gets too aggressive too fast. The Streets-style chugachugachugachuga doesn't work for me until the bridge. A shame because the first half is so lovely and ethereal. He should have waited.

This is the best song for me so far. Interference opinions straight up baffle me sometimes.

In all seriousness tho, I'm psyched (and surprised, frankly) to see so many here enjoying it. Holding out til' Friday.

i actually kind of like ABOY. Tho a naughties U2 rock song, it resists becoming "rawk." There's a nice moodiness to the arrangement that saves the song. I used to hate this one solely bc of the grating "Alllllll because of youuu" 2nd line in the chorus, but I've learned to live with it.

I'd like the song so much more if it had different lyrics. I just can't take the phrase "rock and roll" in a song anymore. Automatic gag reflex. This song is like a lyrical checklist- let's see...grace - check, sound - check, heart - check, soul - check, Jesus - whoa we forgot Jesus; where to...

SOE 31: Yes, we have no bananas

Is "be a winner, eat to get slimmer" a sublime piece of poetry? No, but in the context of that song, mood, arrangement, melody, etc. it works. Also, Bono's vox just used to be mixed better. In Zooropa's title track, his singing fits perfectly; there's dynamics; it jumps out at the right moments...

You're the Best Thing About Me - Song Discussion Thread #2

The way I see it, they had two different song ideas in TBT. I think the verse deserved a better chorus, and the chorus as is should've been sold to Bruno Mars or Ed Sheeran or some other middling pop act. The middle 8 sounds like the usual mid-song "dramatic" moment. Yes, I like the "why am I...

Actually much prefer the verse acoustically. Thought it sounded really nice. Lower-voiced Bono rarely fails to work for me. Then that chorus again. I almost forgot how bad that chorus is. And this stripped down performance more than ever before exposes the failure of that verse-chorus...

You're the Best Thing About Me - Song Discussion Thread #2

The "walking away" part is fine. It's just the chorus that underwhelms me. On a positive note, I've been listening nonstop to classic (and newer) U2 since they released this song. Random thought: POP is a great exercise album. Try it.

You're the Best Thing About Me - Song Discussion Thread #2

Kind of frustrating to hear this song, for I do enjoy the verses a lot. They just sound natural to me, and live in that that sunny, California pop-land. I imagine they're great to blast while driving the west coast. However, that chorus is so Bruno Marsy, I just can't. Sure, it's catchy, but so...

You're the Best Thing About Me - Song Discussion

"The best thing that ever happened, ahoy!" ? Hilarity aside, I can't get the verse out of my head. I wish they would've built the chorus on top of the verse chords and rhythm because I want to keep riding that groove.

btw, California is a fine pop tune. I actually don't have to convince myself it's good at all!

You're the Best Thing About Me - Song Discussion

I really really really hope this is the biggest song of their career. I hope it wins every song award this year. I hope it gets its own postage stamp, holiday and statue. Don't get me wrong, I don't like it that much, but I really want U2 to get this pop-sensation-heard-around-the-globe fantasy...
