Here comes the press rollout...Time magazine cover

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
People in the 80s-90s loved to put U2 on a pedestal, those same people plus more are enjoying trying to shoot the U2 plane out of the sky today - but guess what it hasn't happened yet and won't, they will exit music on their own terms.

Please tell me 5 better albums this year then SOI, since some people on this board seem to think U2 have lost the plot?

I agree with you 100 percent! They are awesome

Well, since SOI is my 6th favorite album of the year, I'd be glad to:

  • The War on Drugs – Lost In The Dream (9/10)
  • Phantogram - Voices (9/10)
  • Against Me! - Transgender Dysphoria Blues (8.5/10)
  • Sun Kil Moon – Benji (8.25/10)
  • The Horrors - Luminous (8.25/10)
  • U2 - Songs of Innocence (8.25/10)

St. Vincent - St. Vincent

Wild Beasts - Present Tense

The Antlers - Familiars

Spoon - They Want My Soul

Flying Lotus - You're Dead

Thank you for standing up and being counted - I will listen to a selection of your stuff and see if I agree :)

The War on Drugs – Lost In The Dream - This album is a good record, sounds like a mix of old U2 sonically with Bruce Springsteen/Tom Petty vocals. I don't think its better then SOI, but it is worth buying. Thank you for the recommendation.

Its the only one I have listened to so far - I would give this record an 8/10, which is a high grade from me :)

Nice to see the Phantogram appreciation. I loved this album until I saw them live. Now it sounds so muted! They are FANTASTIC live!

I hope Voices makes some official list of Top Albums of 2014!

I still like SOI a fair bit, but boy did that #1 RS ranking made me cringe. It's not even so much the #1 ranking (there'll probably be U2 fans who'll have it high or thereabouts anyway), but because it's RS. It just comes off as hopelessly forced, similar to how NME constantly overhyped the Arctic Monkeys over the past year or two.

SOI is my favourite album of the year but i agree with you a rolling stone 5 star review is as meaningless as an nme crap review. This magazines have their favourites!!

It's an open war between those magazines who are kissing and those who are kicking U2's asses.

And as a U2 fan I will pick the one supporting them every time. I might even get an RS subscription now... (or continue to read it free at the library two streets up from my house. Hmm.... :hmm: )

RTJ2 is really good, but I don't think it's as good as SOI. But it's pretty hard to compare a rap album to a rock album.

Perfume Genius! HAHAHAHAHA! I saw him life once, it was like he was making fun of the idea of music. Every song was a four chord piano dirge - exactly the same - with some warbling.

Lana is awful, a vile concoction of record executives and the hipster media. The two worst things....

I am unfamiliar with the Hold Steady. I've heard one song by Sharon Von Etten and it was quite good, but if it's quality is representative of the album it's not as good as SOI.

Taylor Swift....I'm sick of people pretending she's a talented, legitimate artist. Not as good as U2. Not even in the same world, quality-wise.

St Vincent, I can buy that. FKA Twigs is supposed to be awesome but I refuse to listen on account of her name.

Foo Fighers... What a terrible band they have become.

Oh for fucks sake

The Miracle is actually performing better now then it did upon first release. It's not the single... it's the release method.

Right or wrong, it turned them into a joke. They will be fighting that perception for this entire go around.

Why is that so hard to accept around here? Whether or not the release method SHOULD have been a negative is a moot point. It was. Period.

Marginally performing better than Boots, yes. Not what they were hoping for, though. Not what an album as good as SOI deserved, more importantly. First single = first impression.

If the release method had been done by a smaller, critical darling band, they'd be praised for being innovative.

This isn't mentioning whining about getting a free album from a huge artist is silly on its own.

I will argue that the entire release approach - including the backlash - is exactly what U2 needed at this point in their careers.

Since ATYCLB, they have perpetually worked (with varying degrees of success) to be relevant. They are obsessed with the idea of relevancy. They have taken this obsession to the point where, in my opinion, the quality of their music has suffered. Nothing convinced me of this more than when the 360 tour turned into u2's first legitimate "greatest hits" tour, and they abandoned the NLOTH songs and concepts.

The impact of this whole SOI release is something that could finally free U2 to finally stop worrying about being relevant. They just learned the hard way that there is a very large group of people that do not care about them and never will...even when given a free album.

Hopefully instead of dwelling on "what went wrong? Why doesn't anyone like us?", they can focus on music and their fans...and we can get some of that rebellious, inspiring U2 back for the final years of their career. I was encouraged when Bono said they were proud of the itunes effort...and that it was "punk rock" to do this, and he was working on an "apology for the apology".

That's the U2 I fell in love with back in 1991. The U2 that "fucks up the mainstream". They've been missing since 2000, and I hope that this entire experience brings them back to stay.

Thank. You.

His "apology" was meant as tongue-in-cheek and the incompetent media ran it as a legit apology. Good on him for setting the record straight. The MOJO article was a great read and I'm hoping to purchase a copy very soon!!

So have we got to a point yet where certain people are saying some certain people aren't allowed to think SOI is the best album of 2014?

I have heard two songs from Taylor Swifts new album and I like them both :)

I like her and really appreciate that she hasn't gone the "less clothes" route like Miley Cirus or Britney Spears.

I'm also pretty sure she writes her own songs, which is impressive and rare these days for pop stars.

I'm not saying I would chose 1989 over SOI but she's got catchy songs.

Her videos are also pretty entertaining!

Just because something is silly and stupid doesn't mean it isn't true.
