Songs of Innocence Promo Tour - Discussion Thread #3

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
It's the equivalent of what would have happened had they released MOS for NLOTH.

Not a chance. MOS is a meandering hymn of a rock song which if played to the masses would induce further bouts of anger and disinterest from non-U2 fans.

To many, even in the context of a U2 gig, MOS was the boring anti-climax of 360. At least EBW can be easily digested by those who do not militantly hate the band.

Dunno. Maybe. Maybe not.

MOS was the type of song I was dreaming of and hoping for years they would release. It exists in some other realm, that haunting, near-hallucinatory world they used to access. EBW does not come from this world.

To me.

For those of us about to watch in the U.S., how deep into the show does U2 perform?

We have come a loooonnnnng way from this:

U2 - Zoo TV - Opening Night (1992) - YouTube

Can someone imagine the 2014's Bono Version saying something like "we don't need the pop kids".

Good ol' days when U2 were at their peak... :D

So what? That was over 20 years ago. People move on...they evolve...have different perspectives. I wouldn't say some shit I said 20 years ago as well. Don't get me wrong, I love Achtung Baby, Zooropa and Pop (my favorite 3 U2 Albums)...but it doesn't mean their current release and perspectives are not legit. SOI is the best since Pop in my opinion and I'll take it.

I am almost over the acoustic EBW...but can't deny the passion in the performance tonight. Time for SLABT and The Troubles!

By performing a bad ass stripped down acousting EBW at a video award show for a song that doesn't even have a video they're more or less still being bad ass.

Let me maybe put it another way...just watched Nikki Minaj (or however her name is spelled)...absolutely terrible. Comparing the two clearly show the difference between class music and sh#t. U2 are still losing the "pop" kids if you ask me.

That situation today, pre-show:

Reporter - Why don't you play any of your 90's songs? Why no Zooropa? Pop? Passengers?

Bono - NOOOO! Are you serious?!?! If we play those albums we'll lose the pop kids! Bloody fool. Enjoy your Volcano double encore.

Reporter - At least play something off Achtung Baby!!!

Bono - Maybe "One." We'll risk it.

Only if they break out the Bank Of America version.

 oh those that don't understand the context...

Right...the question was..."why don't you play any of the older stuff"...Bono said..."just didn't want to...we are into ZooTV".

Now...he is saying "just don't want to play the older stuff...we are into SOI".

Same message..different delivery.

Tonight's performance of EBW is getting near universal praise on Twitter .... and that's extremely rare for the Twitter minions.

I'm generally opposed to acoustic U2, but I like acoustic EBW a whole hell of a lot better than album EBW.

I love the album version and the acoustic version is decent. I hope we do get the album version as the airplay tour version though.

The strings are awesome. Would love to see a concert with a symphony orchestra ala Metallica

Read a great comment on a YouTube video from It might Get Loud that said something along the lines that 'The Edge doesn't play guitar, he creates an orchestra from his guitar'

Watching that performance I was struck with three things:

1. A stripped down stage show a-la indoor Joshua Tree will work very well after the grandiose 360 and Vertigo tours.
2. 'Acoustic' EBW works very well live, though i would still love to hear a full band version.
3. Fuck me these boys can still play.

Holy crap, I don't think I've seen Bono put that much effort and emotion into a song in a very long time, especially in that third chorus. Amazing effort.
That said, you can see this song slays his vocal chords, I hope they don't play it near the start of their setlist on tour.

oh i think they have pretty much done that/made comments to a similar effect with this release (as in "pop kids" being the collective iphone-owning tantrum throwers)... :D

also "pop kids" is way too relative.

The Zoo TV era arguably was way more "pop" than R&H/TJT stoic bono. Zoo TV was a huge way to atract a lot of pop kids actually.

He could say the exact same words if asked on why are they playing acoustic right now, "this is what we want to play now, our fans are into this too, and if we lose some fans because of these, they're just some pop kids and we don't need them"

And you do know that by using Twitter's search feature you can see everyone's tweets about a certain topic, right?

No shit... My comment was more towards your insinuation that liking U2 is such a rare thing for users of Twitter, as if it's only used by tween girls to look at Justin Bieber pictures.
