Well, no Fett, Vader or Emperor in the new trilogy. I wonder who or what, the conflict in the new movies will be with.

It is so disappointing that we're getting a new story when there's so many options from the EU. As has been pointed out, Thrawn would have been a great trilogy to work with, just for example.

But of course, the problem is obvious: The actors are too old...too old to begin the training play the characters.

Just hope this film fails because now we're stuck with that asshole Orci directing the next Trek movie for some inexplicable reason.

No Star Wars film has ever failed at the box office. So yeah, pretty sure that's not gonna happen.

This is science fiction so there's no reason a 72 yr old Han Solo (who's in better shape than LeBron James) can't battle a dead Darth Vader and Boba Fett.

I actually don't mind a new story, but I do think they should utilize certain EU characters, specially the next generation of Skywalkers and Solos.

My theory is that they will have next generation Skywalkers and Solos (I'm guessing two of these will be played by Oscar Isaac and Daisy Ridley), but it just won't be the ones from the EU. Because fuck that. That's stale as hell.

Yeah. I enjoyed the three Zahn books (the only EU I've bothered with) but they're way too convoluted to be adapted. And people thought there was too much going on in the prequels; this is even moreso.

It's a little ridiculous to expect them to use pre-existing material after all this time, which would be extremely anticlimactic.

But it means now that the EU is nothing more than glorified fan fiction! Nuuuu!

Which is what it's always been anyway, I don't see what the problem is.

It does really bother me that it completely destroys the EU, there are some really great books in those series. Ah well, I mean, you're kinda right, that it's "just" glorified fan fiction, but, on the other hand, we weren't ever expecting to get sequel films. It was a nice way to keep the saga going for the fans that wanted more, without destroying the integrity of the original films by making some shitty Disney produced sequels.

I slogged tyhrough the Zahn Triology. Didn't like it much at all. Of course read for Luke, Leia, Han, and Chebacca (it's been however many years since I got them at the libary, or maybe bough the first one)...and Thrawn was the only new character that was really interesting to me.

SO I hope much of the ZT would not be done.

There was one other book I really liked....it came oyut not too longer after the ZT. SO it's been ? 25 plus years since I've read one

Anyone want to recommend any for future reading.

How exactly is it stale if it's a new story?

Fuck that indeed. Give me some kick ass characters that already exist and create a new storyline for them. Daisy Ridley as Jaina Solo? Hell yes.

Most of the novels were very amateurish, both in the writing and the stories they told (which were usually far too derivative of previous story elements - both in the films and in other EU works). Zahn's were probably the best in terms of capturing the feel of the movies and they had the same sort of plot momentum as well. The X-Wing series had some strong stuff in them and Hambly's Children of the Jedi novel was at least something different...

From a personal perspective, I think anything before Return of the Jedi should be considered cannon. These new films really only demolish that period of this universe. On top of that, I read that the Clone Wars television show actually heavily incorporates some EU material such as Darth Bane, but I guess they made the announcement mentioning that future "canon" works could also incorporate references to EU material. Again, it doesn't really make sense to destroy a lot of the great history of the EU when only the (mostly weak) post-ROTJ books/comics actually contradict these new films.

Recent years there has been a lot of in the distant past old republic timeline books and comics.

Some of the comics deal with the origins of the jedi and what not, their kinda cool, not the greatest writing by any means, but they make for interesting stories that would be cool to expand on with some better writing.

There are also the Legacy comics set around 100 years on from ROTJ, and there exists a benevolent form of the empire. Which if ever adapted would have given scope for keeping a lot of the older EU stories.

I'm not overly bothered about scrapping the EU stories...It's more some of the characters I wish they had kept.

They need to get the guy who played Kyle Katarn in the Dark Forces/Jedi Knight games to make a film.

Realize that a 72 year old can do many of the things that Han Solo does in the Star Wars movies, so there is no need there to claim science fiction in order to make it possible. Again, there are people age 72 that are in better shape than 90% of American High School and College students. That's Science Fact, not fiction.
But, if you need to in some way be sexually attracted to the characters in the new film, then I could see how Harrison's age might get in the way for some.

I wonder if the new plot is going to be Leia cheats on Han with a Sith Lord and turns to the dark side. She ends up killing Han, and their child spends most of the rest of the trilogy learning the ways of the force and must confront Leia and either turn her from the darkness or destroy her. That would be a real shocker yet would still be In keeping with the themes of the previous trilogies. Imagine that, Carrie Fisher as the new Darth Vader?

All I took away from that is Buk thinks Hewson is sexually attracted to Harrison Ford.

You're just messing with everyone now, right?

JJ Abrams would have to change his name, have extensive plastic surgery and go into hiding for the rest of his life. And I'm not even kidding.
