U2's Thirteenth Album: Aimless Uncertainty?

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Probably. Not saying this is a bad place. Interference rocks. And condescension is pretty much a part of any online forum. Give people a soapbox and they start pissing from it. Now maybe I am being condescending

It says I joined in July 2000 but I could have sworn I was a member during the late 90s. Maybe I was just a creepy lurker and don't remember :hmm:

Either way it's sorta frightening that I've been an officially registered member here since I was a teenager and I'm now 33.

Remember that everyone had to re-register.

Some even longer. Apparently there was some great server crash or reformat in 2000 that reset the join dates, which is why all the longest-term posters have the same registration date in 2000. I don't know when the original forum began but it existed in 1999.

I believe, although I can't quite remember (I was drunk a lot back then) that it was just a format change.

The best troll job in Interference history. By a teenage girl.

Which sort of says it all about the nature of trolling and even worse regarding the adults who troll.

Wait. A teenage girl was behind all of that?

Hmmmm. I must be missing something. I just went back and looked at some of those threads. So someone just shows up here, calls herself The Edge, and everyone unquestioningly believes it? Where was the incredulity? Did she somehow convince the site admin she was real?

I expected to see a lot of "yeah, right, sure you're The Edge" in those threads, but it's mostly just people

Personally I can't believe I've been here over a decade now. And still just two albums in that time!

Interference itself first started in 1996, to the best of my recollection. Like many forums, including @U2, it spun off of WIRE, which was a daily digest of posts.

Joel, the founder, obtained "Discotheque" and placed it online to share in late December 1996 or very early 1997. This was well before all the file-sharing nonsense. He thought it was legal to do so. Turns out, it wasn't supposed to be released yet, but we were all able to obtain it. This kind of forced U2 to release the song a bit sooner than planned as radio stations and such had the song.

I don't know when the forum kicked in, but for a while this place had some real issues with the mods. They'd fight and close down threads and constantly ban people. I hate to say it, but some came across a bit power hungry.

Fortunately, all that has calmed down. Mods are very appropriate in their behavior and warnings. :)

Because the moderators told everyone they had confirmed it was actually The Edge.

I never saw Wire, didn't know about u2.com. Had limited acess to the Net, as well. I think I found @U2 first in 2001 or '02, it was nice there . Then found Interland and lurked here off & on in '01, '02.

While @u2 was nice, i saw here in by '03 that there were alot more active people so I registed at the end of 2003. In time for the begining of the run up to what would be the Vertigo Tour/HutDub. Been here ever since, and still look at Achtoons over at @u2. Kelly's soooo funny.

Other than some posters might think I'm too talky... look how long this post ended up being...I'm usually nice & considerate. Someone really, really has to offend me for me to show my nasty side. Even then I usually try to restrain how I reply as to not make things worse. I think I've only really snapped at one person and maaaybe got a bit testy at one or 2 other posts/ers. A very good track record for 10 1/2 years I'd say. :D

And what ever jokes & etc that some of you make about PLEBA-
BAGEL
we usually are very suportive of each other while still having fun ,even jokey fun at each other. Only very occasional misunderstandings, snappishness etc.
And smilies usually help to avoid misunderstanding in the first place for most things.
Fb has taken a bunch of people way, whom I hope some might return when there is a new album, or at least the new tour! :fingerscrossed: :)

I'm glad I missed the early after effects of 9/11, tho! :yikes:

I missed that Fake Edge was revealed to be a teenaged girl.
wow, I didn't know that either, cori!

Yep. Even Joel, the founder of Interference, claimed it was the real Edge. Fake Edge had a special avatar and everything.

But Matt, the founder of @U2, claimed he did some checking and said the IP address, which is how I assumed Joel checked, did not match up with a person in Dublin (or London, or NY, or LA). It was with someone in Iowa (or similar). He was even able to track the IP address to a person (which is how we discovered the gender and relative age).

I believed Joel's claim initially, but Matt's proof was undeniable. Plus, while initial posts from "Edge" appeared legit, later comments began to be very odd, things that Edge would not write. Answers to some bigger questions also went unanswered. In retrospect, it was clear that fake Edge was posting replies similar to that found in publications (just phrased differently to avoid suspicion).

Not sure if the checking Joel and others did on "Edge" was poorly done, if this a publicity stunt, or if Joel was merely playing a prank. Regardless, fake Edge remains infamous.

Not so much "even Joel" as in that Joel was the one continuously trying to convince everyone incl. the mods that it was the real Edge, even though that never made any bloody sense.

Remember when Fake Edge called Jick a terrorist? :D
He's not a terrorist, just mental in the head.

The good old days of 'Elvis' and trolling everyone before the site went in for an upgrade.

Remember the chat room? Used to be fun going in there and talking to people

Invisible did not FLOP! Neither did Ordinary Love. I'm so sick of constantly reading this. It's not true. Some people here are only trying to come up with their own theories about why the album's taking so long. The songs did very well considering they weren't single releases. The performances were well received. Please stop downplaying it. U2 can only hope for their new songs and singles to be received like that.

I'm still hearing OL a lot on the radio here, which is special, because they don't play much U2 at all.

Thank. You. :applaud:

I don't hear either of them on the radio, but I live in a small town with crappy radio choices and I rarely listen to it anymore. Invisible DID get a lot of airplay here though right around the SB ad and that first week of release.

I joined during the Vertigo Tour. That was an awesome time.
I lurked a lot during Vertigo. So did Mr CK. Neither of us ever made an account though. I finally caved and made one in 2007 after some urging from friends through LiveJournal. And then I wasn't that active until the awesome setlist parties of 360 really took off. Those were some glorious threads...minus a few GIFs. :yuck:

I love PLEBA. I've got a few of the regulars there from the PGP as FB friends as well, and I like having multiple places to chat with everyone.

I'm a member of a couple U2 groups/pages on FB, and I will say that all the drama and infighting aside, I prefer the atmosphere here. It's a lot easier to have inside jokes, and it feels....almost like this forum is more of a tight-knit group.

I agree with the majority -- this is a great topic for discussion! It's actually been a pleasant read these last few pages! :applaud:

Remember when Fake Edge called Jick a terrorist? :D

That was an incredible moment, worth the trolling.

Some really good put downs, impressive for a teen, like, "do you think I give a fig what someone like you posting on a forum like this thinks?"

It was how I'd hope any real band member would respond to jick.

I read Wire back in the day. Even got PopMart Montreal tickets from someone on it. Back then, $52.50 seemed steep.

That's true. If I recall, you were one of the better mods back then, Salome, and you challenged Joel on this "Edge" matter.

And "Edge" calling Jick a "terrorist" was indeed one example of the things that Edge would never say.

I certainly remember that you and Angela were fighting the good fight in that thread. That was something else when I first read it.

My question, to this day, is what the fuck did he mean by "he knew something about our staff that only an insider would know?" Seriously, the way he continually phrased it made it sound like he thought it was The Edge because he confirmed he banged someone on Interference's staff.

I'm over FB, personally. I check in and use it to keep in touch with a few people but its entertainment value is very low. Interference is a fountain of wit and depth in comparison.
