How come everyone seems so down on it?

It's got some rough edges around it, sure, but overall the album is a hidden gem.

There really isn’t a song there that’s not worth listening to, IMO.

It’s a fantastic insight into the transition of the band as they worked to find themselves. Boy received a better reception than they may have imagined, but they knew that pumping out the same record the second time out could be detrimental. They tried something new and it wasn’t perfect, but it was the right direction.

Each of the tracks on October are worth listening to. Glimpses of what would later become a staple of the War album are apparent with the haunting sounds of Fire, Tomorrow, and the title track. The ability for the band to adapt and create a full encompassing mood and sound was peaking through. They technical side of the album isn’t recognized well enough. I find myself getting lost in the many of the songs because of the aura they create. Rejoice, October, and Scarlet are perfect examples of this. I adore the times I can spend an evening on my back porch to listen to these tunes and enjoy life.

Bono’s lyrical abilities are much more apparent here than on Boy. Most of U2’s catalog has the band in either a confident, fun, or anger filled mood. October is unique as Bono expresses his internal fears and sorrow. Look at I Fall Down and Stranger. Those tracks feel…well…human. It’s Bono with his walls down. We really don’t see that again until One Tree Hill and Kite.

In fact, Stranger in a Strange Land seems to sum up the entire album. The members of U2 had always wanted to be big, but they didn’t know what to do with it once they got there.

The album does not get the credit and accolades it deserves. It was ahead of it’s time, especially for such a young band. Nor does it feel dated (well, as long as you ignore the cover art ). It’s surprising to me that folks seem to steer away from a very well done collection of work.

...I can't change the world...but I can change the world in me...

I'm right there with you on October, buddy, right there.

It's easily one of my 12 favorite U2 albums :D

Nah, seriously..I love it. Tomorrow is such an amazing track, as is I Threw A Brick, I Fall Down, October, Gloria, on and on..

It's one of my favorities. I have a friend that's "born again." She said the album was
sold in her local Christian Book store, wnen it first came out.

I think the first side of the album is pretty amazing. I like Tomorrow, until the band comes clattering in full-bore halfway through, and some of his lyrics collapse under religious weight at the end. October is lovely, and I really like Scarlet. (Nice to rediscover it thanks to the 360 tour.) Is That All? is a bit scattershot lyrically, which is what I think you can say about most of the album. For me it's among their weakest, though I feel like it's a more timeless record than War (which feels much more like a product of its time).

I personally love October. Tomorrow, Gloria, and October are all great songs, but the one that I think really gets overlooked is Rejoice. I also think it's the first U2 album where Edge starts to get his "sound".

personally, not a bad song on it.. it flows better than War, I never liked the running order of War infact... I liked SBS on Side Two of UABRS, but strangely not as a studio album opener... actually I don't think any of the songs on War are real 'openers' like Homecoming, IWF or Streets..

I listen to it fairly regularly... Stranger... & Scarlet took me about a decade to like, now they are probably my favourites along with I Fall Down and I always thought the last 30seconds of Fire [fade out] were just beautiful... plus I like the use of the sparse piano throughout the record...

A schoolfriend's older brother bought it on release, the photo on white mount, songs labelled on the front vinyl;

.....and I recall thinking god these blokes have some bad hair...

so some things got better...

Just fails to impress I guess. There's only two songs on there that really catch my eye, and those are Fire and Gloria. The rest I don't really connect with.

I have a strong emotional connection to October and there are several songs on it that touched me very much when I first heard them and still do. I think it's underrated ... but it's also a bit difficult, maybe a clumsy album with all it's obvious Christian references. I believe it's a very personal and honest album that tells so much about the band's mindset at that particular time. Personally, I can connect to most of the songs, but I see why it usually pales in comparison to U2's classic work.

I do like October, but compared to the energy and ambition of Boy, I can understand why some consider it to be a sophomore slump.

Yep. Haven't listened to it in years but I do like it. And I'm convinced I have a different version of SIASL than the rest of the forum cos I love that song.

Great album. The only negative thing I have to say about it is that U2 also recorded better ones. And... that's not a very negative comment :)

I agree 100%. October ends up low on my rank list purely because so many of the other albums are so great. Critically, Boy is on the verge of the loss of innocence, and War is already there recognizing and lamenting that loss. October is stuck in between, which makes it hard to figure out for some.

This. Tomorrow and Gloria are among U2's all time best in my opinion.

Yeah, exactly. But I like the album a lot. Especially Tomorrow - that is a gorgeous song.

I'm glad to see some love here for October. I listened to it today on the drive home to Virginia from NJ. (Still on a high from last night's amazing concert and trying to slowly begin u2 detox now that my 360 concerts are over...).

Loved sabretooth47's analysis. Maybe the album isn't as critically acclaimed as others but I find it incredibly moving.

While I've been listening to the album since the mid 80s, I only read several years ago about the story behind the song Tomorrow. Now it's pretty certain that at the end of the song I'll have tears in my eyes. I absolutely love I Fall Down and I Threw a Brick too. Scarlet has been a real treat to hear on this leg of the tour.

Not Tomorrow??

Well it's a nice song. Perhaps its biggest strength is that it totally does not sound like U2, but in a way is U2 all the same. But to me there's just a gazillion songs that are so much better..

I guess one big pro of October over War would be that there's no Red Light on October.
