This is one of the best U2 performance videos I've ever seen:

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.

Good god that is fantastic.

Everyone there looks pumped up, even though the majority of the audience probably doesn't know the song. They just know that it's U2 and it's a freakin' kick ass thing they're playing.

All the boys look like they are having the time of their lives with this.

Why they ditched the song after PopMart I'll never know. This just proves that it could have been one hell of a show-stopper on 360.

I don't like how the guy with the hat called them the 'heavyweights of pop'. :tsk:

Probably safe to say that 'the guy with the hat' could have called them whatever the hell he wanted.

But yes, that's a great performance. I've said a few times, in the US market, the songs on Pop would have been given a far better birth/reception, and Popmart given a far, far better introduction if they had gone the ZooTV route and given it a spin in arenas first. This performance + a full on U2 show with all the oversize everything - you can only imagine what a monster Mofo would have been in an arena.

I just looked up Earnie Shavers on google. Bored. Had no idea he was a pro boxer and regarded as the hardest hitter ever. Not really suited to your posts, you wear people down by submission with long, unarguable posts

Holy mackerel. The bassline, Edge's dirty guitar work on the "chorus"...what a powerhouse version.

What fucking balls they had back then.

It should also be noted that they didn't just do this in Europe; the American MTV awards from that year featured a very dark, aggressive version of Please that was far from catering to the audience.

Would that be the performance of Please Ali described as the worst U2 performance ?

Wow. That was awesome. They we so fuckin' noisy back then. I know that "Please" performance, and I didn't think it was bad at all.

They are playing Zooropa on this tour, shows they still do have balls IMO

I don't think it takes a particular pair of balls playing the opener of your new multi mega world tour

but hey
brilliant performance

Really? Surely she must mean it wasn't the right thing to do, given the occasion? It is an incredibly serious and 'still' thing to do at an MTV Awards. I mean, at that event, you're supposed to ride in on a unicorn rainbow with a hundred backup dancers, strip to your underwear and lip sync an only marginally different cover of an old dance hit with a guest rap from Snoop Dogg while glitter and confetti shoots out of your boobs and over the crowd - not stand there with your hood up, hands in your pocket, under a single backlit spotlight, singing a heavy, zero-energy song about sectarian conflict. If she was in the crowd and judged the performance by the reaction of the 13yr old girls that make up 90% of the MTV audience, then I assume that reaction wasn't exactly crash hot. Bono's voice is cracking a bit of a wobbly in parts, and overall there are far better versions of Please from various Popmart nights, but I can't imagine how that was a 'bad' performance when isolated from the occasion, let alone U2's 'worst.' That's mad.

yeah it's hardly Staring At The Sun las vegas!

but yeah this is one of my favourite U2 performances ever, never seen it with the introduction (i find the whole BIG ENTRANCE thing a little cringeworthy for an awards show, they should have just walked out and busted out Mofo but what can you do?) probably the best performance of Mofo anyway. mix is perfect!

She didn't say it was their "worst" she just noted that it was far from their best, and many agreed with her following that performance. I remember watching the show that night, commentators were talking about how U2 seemed as if they didn't want to be there. Following the performance they left and didn't do any post show interviews or anything. It was very odd.

A lot of that bassline is playback. It's a great performance, but U2 got a lot of shit during this time from purists.

ZooTV had a lot of "backing tapes" but it was mostly filler, then Numb(what a nightmare live), but when U2 started doing performances like this people started bailing.
