"Dance" is the only track that I'd agree should be a little bit shorter, only towards the end. That opening drum bit leading into the synth-'splosion though? Probably the best moment of the album. Risky move, I'd say.

Oh COBL! Re: my profile comment malarky, no Splendour for me sadly. Just don't have that kind of money and my parents aren't about to stake me for a concert. Probably won't even make it to an LCD/HC sideshow given they're interstate :(

my crew bailed in the end, so i'm not going either. not overly concerned, and it sounds like i would have had to be at a computer for five hours, the website that was selling tickets couldn't handle the demand, there were 15,000 people in the queue.

The Doors are nearly impossible to listen to at this point with any kind of objectivity because of the scores of tools who make it so hard to avoid, and Morrison himself impossible to take seriously for the same reason. But I do think they made some great music, are a totally unique and influential band, and I think Morrison was an interesting guy and very much an artist. To make fun of his (arguably) nonsensical lyrics but to praise someone like Dylan is a bit unfair, and as for his stage presence, I'm not sure that without him we have someone like Patti Smith or subsequently Boner and Eddie Vedder who get "in the zone" while performing.

I say this as someone who practically never plays their stuff (and I only own the 2-disc Best Of).

Quite honestly, it's all anyone needs from them.

Yeah, this is my primary issue with them: their songs simply weren't very good, for the most part. I enjoy about a dozen of their songs, spread out over, what, six albums? That's pathetic for a band pitched as an unassailable, genius rock monolith. On top of that, I never thought they had as much talent as a band like Cream or The Who, who could take a simple blues cover and elevate it to a mindblowing degree. The Doors just never had that sort of power.

And then there's the organ. I fucking hate organs.

Like you guys have said, yeah, I really only like a handful of their songs. And they're the ones that you always hear on classic rock stations. "Roadhouse Blues" is probably my favorite song of theirs. I don't hate them by any means, though. Just not a big fan.

"Love Her Madly" for me.

Apparently the City of Miami hated Morrison's organ, too.

HI-OH!

Any other band and I would keep my mouth shut. I dont mean to be a negative nelly and I wouldnt hold it against anyone for liking them. They're just the one band that really gets under my skin... okay, and the eagles too...

I really love Break On Through (one of my favorite intro riffs ever), and rather like a small handful of their other songs, but overall, I'm very meh on The Doors.

This is a fair criticism, and again it's about the fans more than the band themselves. There are plenty of other artists who only have a handful of classic songs to their names and are totally revered while not derided as often and Morrison and Co. And it should be noted that the Best Of that everyone has is a TWO disc set, and there's not much filler on it. Even if none of those six studio albums are flat-out masterpieces (ironically I'd probably take L.A. Woman, their big finale, over any of the others) that's a pretty great roster of standout tracks.

And more importantly: those great Doors songs couldn't have come from anyone else. They were a very original act, and an important/definitive one from that time period, for better or worse. I would never put them on the same level as a band like The Who, though while Cream was more talented as well, but they certainly weren't anywhere close to worthy of a 2-disc Best Of.

Can't wait to quote "I hate the fucking Eagles" ad infinitum once they're announced as the ACL main headliner in a week and a half.

I think that's fair. The Doors were incredibly unique, perhaps a taste I have yet to acquire. It's not just the bloat; I listened to the fucking Moody Blues today. It's a combination my loathing of everything Morrison represents and a dearth of songs that transcend it...for me. And it's all on me, here. I wasn't attempting to tear apart a sacred cow with my wolf pack of one. Glad it could spark some legitimately interesting discussion though.

Now, let's lock the Doors on this discussion.

I love both of these songs, but obvious ripoff is obvious:

YouTube - I Quit Girls - Japandroids

YouTube - The Smashing Pumpkins - Mayonaise

I'm with Laz on this one. I don't love them, and can't even remember the last time I listened to one of their songs, but they have far more songs I like than most other '60's or early '70's bands (Rolling Stones, The Who, etc).

Plus, there's this:
