Whats The Biggest US Stadium

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Rose Bowl is by far the biggest stadium they will be playing in according to Wikipedia.

Actually that is not true. FEXEX FIELD is larger than the Rose Bowl by 568 seats.

Here are the 20 largest stadiums in the United States with maximum seating capacity listed for a sporting event. U2 360 adds capacity to this with the GA section on the field. Many of the largest stadiums in the United States are located in rural college towns and not ideal locations for Rock Stadium shows since they are not near a major city or Metro area. U2 360 is visting 3 of the 20 largest stadiums in the United States:

1. Beaver Stadium, State College Pennsylvania - 107,282
2. Michigan Stadium, Ann Arbor Michigan - 106,201
3. Ohio Stadium, Columbus Ohio - 102,329
4. Darrel K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, Austin Texas - 100,119
5. Neyland Stadium, Knoxville Tennessee - 100,011
6. Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, Los Angeles California - 93,607
7. Sanford Stadium, Athens Georgia - 92,746
8. Tiger Stadium, Baton Rouge Louisiana - 92,400
9. Cotton Bowl, Dallas Texas - 92,200
10. Bryant-Denny Stadium, Tuscaloosa Alabama - 92,138
11. FEDEX FIELD, Landover Maryland - 91,704
12. Rose Bowl, Pasadena California - 91,136
13. Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, Gainesville Florida - 88,548
14. Jordan-Hare Stadium, Auburn Alabama - 87,451
15. Kyle Field, College Station Texas - 82,600
16. Bobby Bowden Field at Doak Campbell Stadium, Tallahassee FL - 82,300
17. Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, Norman OK - 82,112
18. Memorial Stadium, Lincoln Nebraska - 81,067
19. Notre Dame Stadium, Notre Dame Indiana - 80,795
20. Camp Randall Stadium, Madison Wisconsin - 80,321

Are U2 still big in America? i mean are they massive? I thought they had died out over there but thats a heck of a lot of big stadiums theyre playing.Do people know their new stuff or are they just going to their old stuff?

From the same Wiki, in regards to the new Cowboys stadium:

"It was completed on May 29, 2009 and seats 80,000, but is expandable to seat up to 100,000."

So who knows if U2 is using the "expanded" version whatever that means.

It's funny because the Rose Bowl doesn't LOOK bigger than any of these places. I guess just because it isn't tiered like most NFL stadiums so it appears smaller.

It is just a question, I don't want to bother anyone, it is just that I wonder. What is the use of large stadiums in rural areas? and if they are not good for rock concerts because they are not near a mayor city or metro area what kind of events are they built for that can avoid those mentioned problems? It seems so strange and anti-economical to me I can't figure it up.

In Dallas they sell "party passes" or something like that. It isn't a seat, you can walk around, spend money, eat and watch the game on monstervision...I think it costs $25...that is part of the expanded attendance number. I think they can reconfigure an endzone and would do that for the super bowl.

I don't think they will do either for the concert

all of the biggest stadiums in the US (including all of the top 20 listed except Fed Ex Field) are for universities, mostly used for college football (american football, not 'soccer').

NFL stadiums are typically in the 70,000 range.

Are U2 still big in America?

Yes, they are huge.

i mean are they massive?

There is no one out there who can sell as many new albums and concert tickets combined as U2 in America. They have the best combination of album and tickets sales of any artist in America. They are essentially as popular as they have ever been, when measured against the rest of the competition.

I thought they had died out over there but thats a heck of a lot of big stadiums theyre playing.Do people know their new stuff or are they just going to their old stuff?

Thats crazy you would think that, because that could not be further from the truth. I'd say the number people seeing them on tour is a combination of people into the older music or the new music. The tour is setting GROSS and ATTENDANCE records in nearly every market it plays in. One of the tour stops on the fall leg should set the attendance record in North America for a non-festival concert.

WOW,cool. It was amazing to see the fans outside the hotel in Chicago.I thought the crowd in the stadium were quite flat though.

College football.

The official name is the following:

Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium at Owen Field

33rd largest stadium in the world, 17th largest in the United States. Opened in 1925. Capacity 82,112

The Gaylord family, who own everything from newspapers to hotels natiowide, donated millions of dollars to the stadium renevation which was completed earlier this decade and therefore the place was named after them. Having sat in the renovated area many times, i could care less how "gay" the name sounds. :sexywink:

FedEx Field in Maryland is the biggest stadium in the NFL, but there isn't much field space: when it was built, the goal was to have the fans sitting close to the field, to make tons of noise, and distract visiting teams. By contrast, the Rose Bowl - while a little smaller than FedEx in terms of number of seats -- has a larger field. So, you can bet that a few more people will be at the L.A. show than the D.C. show, but not by much.

I think the name is cool. Very unique. Its interesting that the 33rd largest stadium on the planet is located in Oklahoma. This will be U2's first concert in Oklahoma since the WAR tour.

Well, there can't be that much difference in field space. Both need 100 yard football fields with 10 yard enzones on either side, as well as sideline space for teams. How many people they allow on each field will probably depend more on fire code laws in each area rather than how much extra sideline space each field has. I just checked each field on google Earth and they are both equal in width, but the Rose Bowl has greater length than FEDEX FIELD, but not by a lot.

Los Angeles is a bigger market than Washington DC, plus the Rose Bowl show is the only U2 show on this leg in California. The FEDEX FIELD show is not getting as many people as it normally would thanks to the stadium show in Charlottesville Virginia.

The Rose Bowl show soldout its initial allotment of tickets in 6 hours, said to be 90,000 tickets. They have released more since then, appear to have sold most of those as well. Only single $95 dollar seats remain.

FEDEX FIELD soldout the field, lower level, and middle level within hours of going on sale in the Spring. Only $30 dollar tickets on the top level of the stadium are still available.

Anyways, it should be interesting to see which stadium comes out on top, but the Rose Bowl has the advantage do to less U2 shows in the area and the larger market.

I believe the attendance record for a single non-festival concert in the USA was set by the Who in 1982 with their concert at JFK stadium Philadelphia with 91,451 in attendance. Both shows at the Rose Bowl and FEDEX FIELD by U2 may break that record.

Go Canes!!! Im from Miami too, but I am away at the moment.

The new Cowboys Stadium is apprently expecting 110,00 people for the Giants/Cowboys game this weekend. So depending on how they handle "party pass" seats, a concert there may be easily be the largest in the US.

Yes - I had read that for a football game it can easily SEAT 100,000.

I am guessing then, that for U2 with GA it woul dsurpass that number if sold out...

I read 82,000 seats plus up to "35,000 party passes" for football.

What is a "party pass"? If it means just sitting inside some place and watching the game on a screen, I don't think that really counts toward attendance and I'm sure they would not use that for concerts. FEDEX FIELD is still recognized as the largest stadium in the NFL with 91,700 seats, so I think the 80,000 figure for the Cowboys stadium is probably correct.

A party pass are cheap tickets for GA room only areas in "party decks" that overlook the field. I know they used it for Paul McCartney's concert at Cowboys Stadium.
