Morrissey, years of refusal!

Morrissey's forthcoming 9th studio album "Years Of Refusal" has unfortunatly leaked onto the internet, well shy of its Feb 16th release date, alas on first listen Im convinced that this album is indeed Morrisseys best, an instant classic imo!

Great album. Black Cloud, Something Is Squeezing My Skull and You Were Good In Your Time are my favorites.

My only complain is the lack of a trumpet intro for "One day goodbye will be farewell", it sounded great on the live version

I can't believe I've never noticed it before, but with the gray, Moz looks like a cross between Jay Leno and Bruce Campbell.....

I like the song, sounds like classic Moz, and not in the "rehash" way.

The man is heading my way this spring, playing in a tiny theater I've avoided ever since a girl was murdered there a couple of years ago during a show.

I guess I should go. But last time he played here he seemed annoyed and above it all. How very Morrissey of him.

Is this generally a good album to buy for people who have never heard Morrissey before? I've never heard any of his solo albums (or The Smiths, for that matter), but have been wanting to get into his music for a while. Should I buy this album, or get a different one?

I have no idea whether or not this is a good entry point or not, but it couldn't possibly be better than The Smiths' self-titled or The Queen Is Dead. Get those, ASAP, if you haven't done so already.

I think it is essential that The Smiths should be listened to prior to any Morrissey. It would be kind of awkward to listen to Morrissey first and then The Smiths. I'd find it that way. There is something appealingly polished and perfected about Morrissey's solo material that might make The Smiths seem a little rustic and less immediate to appreciate. Almost off-putting.

Lyrically Morrissey is much more forward and blatant now, not a bad thing, yet there is something more cryptic and deligtfully confusing about his lyrics with The Smiths, and I think that the first album or the Singles compilation should be a newbie's entry point into the legend that is Morrissey; so that they can begin thinking about the emotions Morrissey was feeling and what sentiments he was trying to express, rather than just being handed some of it on a plate when listening to his post-2004 material.

I think that The Smiths' "Singles" compilation would be the best place to start; to me, The Smiths are stronger when dealing with singles than with albums as a whole. From there, try Morrissey's "Bona Drag" as an example of his early work and "You Are the Quarry" for his later work.

The self-titled Smiths album is great. Some truly cracking song on there, namely Suffer Little Children, This Charming Man, Hand In Glove ("The sun shines out of our behinds!") AND Still Ill.
