That order could change though :)

seeing Fez - Being Born rated so low on so many lists is a head scratcher for me. it is by far the most interesting/experimental song they've done since the 90's.
 What's even better is the fact that it isn't filler: something left on the record to simply proceed one song and precede another. I knew the band was going for an "album" feel, as opposed to merely a collection of songs, but "Fez - Being Born" can stand on its own, which I think is quite an achievement :applaud:

EDIT: I also love the variety of these lists - there may be no "standout single," but it would seem this record is doing a little something for everyone (or a lot, in my case )

Ok... a few head scratchers for me...

White As Snow is 9.5/10 for me and my fav song because it feels like First Time PLUS the landscapes imagery and feeling of space that Joshua Tree brought to a lot of its songs. It's the soul of The First Time and the feel of In God's Country. Why the hate?

Crazy Tonight - What's the appeal? I'm serious... good on all of you for liking it, but I can't figure it out... to me it sounds like cheesy Brit-pop, and the synths/lyrics after the first chorus make me shudder. Even the opening guitar parts remind me of "Feed the World" (except we're in 2009). The song has zero bite... and the chorus is just kind of there... Please help me. :reject:

Yeah, this album could pull of a suprise 5th single.

I think the next 3 singles (after Boots) are already claimed: Crazy Tonight (rumours in some review(s) has this pegged as the second release. Magnificent and Moment of Surrender will, no doubt, receive and edit treatment to get them under the 5-minute mark somewhere. The suprise 5th single could be a real fight between Stand Up Comedy and Breathe.

I hope they don't release Crazy next. It's definately single worthy, but as long as it lives up to expections live, this should be released during the tour. Let the live performances increase the buzz. They could do with this what they tried to do with COBL, though COBL was a weaker song live.

They should release Stand Up next, Boots was a serious mis-step. Show the world what this album is truly like. Then MOS. Then Crazy. Then Mag last, a great coda and will be sure to generate some revival type buzz as the lifespan of the album in the media's consciousness dies out.

See that's why these ranking lists are a bit weird... The fact that a song is at the bottom doesn't mean people don't like it.

Mine would look something like this:

Magnificient
Crazy Tonight
Unknown Caller

Moment of Surrender
Fez-Being Born
Breathe

NLOTH
White as Snow

Cedars of Lebanon
Stand Up
Boots

Those in the same cluster are pretty much interchangeable, but even if I look at the bottom one, I still really like these songs. Cedars or Boots being down there doesn't mean they are bad songs, it's just that they don't quite have the same effect on me than the top ones. But how can you compare a song like White As Snow to Magnificient to Stand Up? They are just different beasts.

This album is simply umbelievably strong from start to finish, there are really no fillers.

And mikal, I LOVE Fez, so raw and powerful

I'll gladly come to your help

Stop over-analysing it. Of course it's not an original song, and it's unabashedly pop. But it doesn't matter, because U2 can do this do damn well. If you remove your pre-conceptions, expectations, personal pride, and all trace of cynicism, you can just let yourself be transported by the pure JOY that is that song

On another album, I might not have loved it so much, but it is PERFECT where it is, it just lifts you right up after the very deep track 1-5.

3 months from now breathe will be appreciated much more its a classic, on the beach clips he ends song with a falsetto b-r-e-a-t-h-e but not done on album.
I was waiting for it!!

Magnificent is growing on me a little and I don't hate Boots at all, I just think everything else is better.

We should revisit this thread in about 6 months and see how different our choices are then.

Lots of different opinions here, it seems like the only song everone agrees on is Magnificient. I think it's on everyone's top 5 and most people's top 3.

This means this should be the next single IMO. 2nd single should always be the best song on the album and/or the one with the widest possible appeal.

Ok, after a solid 20 or so listens (original placements in brackets)

1. Unknown Caller (1)
2. Magnificent (2)
3. Cedars of Lebanon (6)
4. Moment of Surrender (5)
5. Breathe (3)
6. No Line on the Horizon (8)
7. Crazy Tonight (4)
8. Fez-Being Born (10)
9. White As Snow (7)
10. Stand Up Comedy (9)
11. Get On Your Boots (11)

this is too hard now. White As Snow and Cedars Of Lebanon are moving up quite a bit.

one thing i've noticed is that if you don't have time to listen to the whole album, you can really separate different parts by mood more than any other U2 album, imo.

during my drive home for lunch today, i wanted something relaxing, so i listened to:

Moment Of Surrender->White As Snow->Cedars Of Lebanon

on my way back, i needed to wake the fuck up:

Magnificent->Get On Your Boots->Stand Up Comedy

well, i guess you can probably do this with other U2 albums, but if just really seemed right on during my drive today.

Can't really rank, but I'd say

Top: NLOTH, Mag, MOS, UC, Crazy, SUC, FEZ, Breathe

Ehh to Crap: GOYB

Bore me to sleep : WASnow, COLebanon

I know that in 3 months it will be different when the novelty of the new songs is gone, but I couldnt waste one-third of my drive back listening to GOYB. I love the song, but there are so many other new ones!! :hyper:

LOL! i actually didn't listen to GOYB for 2 weeks before the leak, other than the Grammy's performance. i wanted to experience GOYB with the rest of the album.

I listened to it the frist 2 times through when I listened to the album as a whole. Now i have listened to each song 20 or so times, but haven't listened to GOYB since my second run through
