The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
i'm going with 2 wagers now, lol:

Jan 8th - only if we hear something about a release in the next day or two. otherwise...

Jan 27th

I'll take you up on that wager...

I'll stick with TONIGHT (Jan 4th) for the surprise debut of the single

OR

Jan 12th

we can wager a cheese log or some beer or something

Single #2 is usually pushed inside the first month of an album's release date. This is usually the single to tell everyone that the album is out now. Single #1 needs to hit the radio inside the 2 month radius before the album's release date, but not within the one month radius, unless it is to compete with single #2. Single #1 is there to inform people that an album is about to come out. Single #1 usually gets a commercial release (cd single/download) two weeks prior to the album. Single #1 usually does not materialize in commercial (to purchase) form until it has been to radio for 3-5 weeks prior.

This is just my experiece with following U2. I'm saying the start of business week of Jan. 19th we get the world broadcast premier at the latest. Has anyone said 19th yet? I'll pick it, if not I'll edit.

Okay, I'm picking Jan.19th.

Thats what I was thinking. But of course they could throw a curve ball in there and release TWO singles at once to flood the market and drum up interest for the album. Maybe they could release a single for American radio, and another one for European radio...then quickly flip flop. TWO different tracks with TWO different sounds? Could be possible.....didn't we hear them talking about not being sure which single to release? One was a harder rock single and one was a more ambient "newer sounding" single.

If everyones back to work today in the U2 camp then it will be announced on 8 Jan. Otherwise if their back on 12 Jan it will be announced on 15 January.

I'm assuming this is UK?

In the US, I don't know what the the rankings were but I don't think they made much of an impression in the singles chart. As I've only ever lived in the US, I can only speak to that perspective.

Edit: I just checked Sometimes and it only made #97 on the hot 100 Billboard. Beautiful Day was #21 and Vertigo was #31. In the US charts at least, I think whether or not it's the first single has a lot to do with how big it is--i.e., how much airplay and attention it gets. You're right that that doesn't seem to be the same in the UK where a top 5 single is apparently inevitable for U2 no matter the song quality or release schedule.

Yeah but you're forgetting something....since ATYCLB ....U2 has stopped putting out actual physical singles here in the U.S. that you could buy....so the postiion of a single was based on airplay but also on sales of a single...as for airplay in the U.S. most radio stations these days are pop and rap bullshit stations....not as many rock stations anymore..so not as much airplay

Yeah, but now they count legal (paid) downloads too. When Vertigo was released Billboard wasn't counting them. Probably U2 will manage to be in the top 10 of the single charts, but I don't expect too much. Like I said, Rock is not mainstream anymore on the U.S.

I know some have said the 12th, but I will second that. We will hear something this week, and get the song on the 12th... they are leaving it very very late

To be different, I'm going for first airplay on Tuesday the 13th (11.15am, UK time), and a release date of Monday the 26th. I actually think Sicy might be right with the early February single release, but I've decided to be optimistic!

I'm not gonna bother listening to every radio station to see if it plays.

I'll knock myself out with a hammer and wake up the exact day it gets airplay

Anyone remember how Vertigo first got leaked/released? I vaguely remember U2valencia.com having it as an MP3, first. And within hours of course, it had spread like wildfire and was all over the web / radio etc. Wikipedia says Vertigo was released on September 24th of that year, but I don't know if they're referring to the leaked version or the actual release date?

i remember buying The Fly Cassette Single the day it came out, then converting it over quickly to The Fly CD single

i was like, holy shit man, if they can muster up Alex Descends Into Hell For A Bottle of Milk as a kickass B-side, the new album is gonna RAWK

and before that we had Night and Day, another great track as a precursor to a great album.

U2 should push the first single hard. I remain with my January 9th 5pm guess.

24th was the actual date.

On the morning of the 23rd in Australia, Triple J aired an ad that had the chorus in the background, and the main riff saying that it was musics closest guarded secret, and they weren't allowed to play the disc they got and they "stopped wasting time, and found it online"... they were quickly threatened with legal action, because it hadn't leaked and they obviously just said that to get around the embargo.

Ah, okay. Cool, thanks. So I guess it never really "leaked" then, and we didn't hear the single in advance of its official release. If that's the case, then they'll probably do the same thing this time, if they can prevent leaks. Assuming they can, the question becomes, how much advance notice did we get that "Vertigo" was being released on the 24th? Like, a few days' worth? If so, then I'm thinking we'll hear 'Get On Your Boots' any day now, especially since the last two opening singles have been released ~2 months before the album's release date. That would mean right about... now :)

^ it would have meant about a week and a half ago, which is what worries me, LD.

It is a very short turnaround. Also, I think we had vertigo air date a week or 2 beforehand, because I remember the week leading up to it being the longest of my life

We went over this in the previous thread. The single was leaked by Croatian radio station on the 23rd.

U2.com announced that the single would start airing on the 24th, no previous notice. The single was available for download from Itunes on the 27th.

They did however announce that that first single would be Vertigo and when the single would be released for sale (which wasn't until early November) on the 7th of September.

Didn't see this posted, but according to Atu2's off the record column:

Word on the street is that we should be able to hear U2's new single in the next week or so.
We're so close!!!!

Okay I love U2 and all but really? The wait is bad yes but there are sooo many other things I do or need to do (in life) that waiting a week or two more is not the end of the world. In a way big deal. It will come when it comes and we WILL hear it but my whole life does not revolve around this single release nor does the wait make it seem like the longest time! To me its just anoying that we get dates or hopes and nothing happens but otherwise who cares go out and enjoy yourselves before you know it we will all have a new single to enjoy

I'm also waiting for the new Battlestar Galactica episode on Jan 16th. I'm switching between waiting for that and waiting for the new single ;). Patience is a virtue! Right?

and another reason why I say January 9 at 5pm >>> car ride home, new single before the weekend

plus a month before Grammy Awards....we might just see them perform a month before the album release.....who knows

yeah, i was over-exaggerating a bit to emphasise the point, not meant to be taken literally
