I've noticed that Gap and Hallmark have little to no Red stuff anymore. Seems like they are phasing it all out or waiting for a new line next year perhaps? I don't know. But I did see something interesting recently... it was a Walmart commercial on TV and at the end of it they showed an Africa logo with the EDUN logo and "Created By Bono and Ali Hewson" under it. It went by really fast so that's all I caught. I guess EDUN will be available at Walmart soon???

I had a feeling they were onto bigger ways to promote fair trade.

I remember when EDUN first came out and a lot of people in this forum stated that they wished that the EDUN clothing line would be "more affordable" and more available.

Now that this might be happening, people are questioning that move by Edun.:hmm:

Personally, I understand the concern about Wal Mart and shop there about twice a year because of that concern but I will support EDUN if the info turns out to be true that they might be doing some marketing with Wal Mart.

Susan Hanover Designs Joins (RED) and Creates Two New (PRODUCT)(RED) Bracelets for the Holiday Season

October 15, 2008 - Today, jewelry designer Susan Hanover, who is a native of South Africa, announced that she has joined (RED) and will release two unique (PRODUCT)RED bracelet designs just in time for the holiday season. Ms. Hanover's (PRODUCT)RED wrist cuffs and signature stone-wired bangles are priced at $125 and $68 respectively. They are available at select retailers and through Susan Hanover Designs - Jewelry Designer, and 50% of the profits from each sale will go directly to the Global Fund to help eliminate AIDS in Africa.

"The beauty found throughout Africa has inspired my creations and its people have touched my heart," said Ms. Hanover. "It is humbling to be able to combine my work with doing something that can benefit my homeland."

The (PRODUCT)RED wrist cuff features two different colored stones; one a deep mahogany red, inspired by the Rooibos "red tea" grown in the Bush and consumed by several African tribes for its herbal remedies; and the other a vibrant fire red similar to the paint color that Ndembu warriors in Central Africa rub on themselves during celebrations as a symbol of life and health. The (PRODUCT)RED stone-wired bangle includes two red jade stones in round and oval shapes, set on an undulating wire which reflects the ocean waters surrounding Africa.

For online purchase and for a list of retail locations carrying the Susan Hanover (PRODUCT)RED bangle and cuff, please visit her website, Susan Hanover Designs - Jewelry Designer.

Susan Hanover, a native of Johannesburg, South Africa, lived there until she was in her early twenties. This former lawyer turned jewelry designer fulfilled her lifelong passion for design and fashion by creating her company in 2005. Her international presence includes over 400 retailers and specialty shops carrying her recognizable earrings, bracelets and necklaces.

Current partners are: American Express (U.K. only), Apple, Converse, Gap, Emporio Armani, Hallmark, Dell and Microsoft.

Since its launch in the Spring of 2006, more than $110 million has been generated by (RED) partners and events for the Global Fund. (RED) money is already at work in Swaziland, Rwanda, Ghana and Lesotho. For more information, visit PRODUCT RED - Home: Buy Red products from top brands, and help fight aids in Africa

About the Global Fund

Since its creation in 2002, the Global Fund has become the dominant financer of programs to fight AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria, with approved funding of US$10.7 billion for programs in 136 countries. The Global Fund supports programs based on agreed performance targets and disburses money in response to proven results. So far, programs supported by the Global Fund have averted more than two million deaths by providing AIDS treatment for 1.4 million people, TB treatment for 3.3 million people, and by the distribution of 46 million insecticide-treated bed nets for the prevention of malaria worldwide.

(RED) is the Global Fund's largest private sector contributor.

The designs on the sneakers are nice.

I'm not keen on the Susan Hanover (RED) bracelet designs (or the price for that matter) but I am excited about designing a pair of my very own (RED) Converse sneakers !!!! Thanks for the info!

I got the email about the custom red converses...does anyone know if these are made in China? (as I believe, most converse are?). I know that there is a Fair Trade knock-off of a converse-style shoe that is available at Fair Trade stores like Peacecraft, so I was hoping that perhaps these were NOT made in China.

That won't do if they are made in China. Oh well, so much for the personalized Converse shoe idea. I will buy some other (RED) Product that isn't made in China.

any other threads that confirm that wallmart is going to be carrying edun products? i can't find any.

too bad it's not target. oh well. at least it will make the edun products much more affordable and available. they do stand a chance of selling a lot better at wallmart because of price.

stonecircle, if you would have the time to read the previous (RED) threads in this forum, then you would have seen the various discussions that we have had on the topic of "fair trade" and (RED).

I do not have the time right now to address this issue as I am getting ready for a trip next week but I will have the opportunity to find out more info on this topic.

As a fair trader and as a person who is currently working within the Fair Trade field, I can tell you that not every product from China is exploitative labor and until you really KNOW the conditions of the factories where these Converse (RED) shoes are made, then none of us should automatically assume that they are made with exploitative labor and thus we can't buy them.

More later. :cute:

Eitherway I'd be happy since I have both a Target and a Walmart at walking distance :applaud:

Perfect answer, BF. :applaud:

I would have preferred a working relationship between EDUN and Target too but, since we are not privy to all the reasons why these things happen the way they do, all we can really do is to trust that Bono & Ali know what they're doing with their organizations - and I believe that they do.

I went to my Gap tonight that used to have a huge section of Product Red, but now they do not a single Red item in the entire store. :(

I also went to the usual stores that sold Edun in that mall too, struck out with that as well. :( They all said they no longer carry it, except for one which had like 3 shirts in clearance.

^Yeah it's unfortunate, but that is the way Fashion is! plus there is SO MUCH COMPETITION out there! i studied Fashion design and found it to hard to compete-best if you know famous people, have lots of $$ .....Or be the winner of Project Runway! :)
And to be cheesy like Heidi Klum says : "IN FASHION, ONE DAY YOU'RE IN AND THE NEXT YOU'RE OUT! "
