September 12, 13 - Soldier Field - Chicago

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.

The hotels in downtown Chicago are definitely expensive. However, as someone already said, you can get a hotel for a decent price by O'Hare and train it in and back out. You could also try around Midway airport, but the hotels from what I remember can be a little sketchier down there. Also, I would suggest going to Metra.com, which is the suburban train commuter line, and checking the different lines and schedules. There are plenty of hotels in the suburbs at decent rates, and its is just a matter of coordinating the train schedules.

 same here

As it is looking right now Mia is coming with me along with Cari (Cruzila) and possibly a friend of Mia's. I fear for my husband as he waits in line with us

Awesome

I'm bringing two friends... one of them did the GA line with me in Cleveland, the other is a very casual U2 fan (ie knows and enjoys a few songs) who is just coming along for the ride... I hope the concert blows his mind :D

It sounds like a lot of you are coming, and who knows who else is gonna line up... does anyone have a good estimate of when to show up? When i lined up for Cleveland I think we showed up at like 5 am and there were already 60 people! and that was just for an arena...

so, middle of the night? afternoon before? :D

we oughta have a thread about GA, unless there was one that I missed. When to line up, policy on leaving and coming back (my understanding is as long as you're cool with the people around you they'll save your spot assuming you're not gone for like 5 hours?), what to bring, the fact that you probably shouldnt drink anything like 2 hours before they let you in so you dont have to pee  etc... I'd like to know some things and I'm sure there's plenty of people who will be doing GA for the first time

As a life-long Chicago resident I am definitely at this one. Popmart at Soldiers Field was a great experience. 360 will be too. Public transit here is pretty decent, so don't be afraid of checking out hotels along the Red/Brown/Orange CTA transit lines. You can take the train from your hotel to the Roosevelt Ave. stop and easily walk to Soldiers Field from there.

Hey, maybe I should have a U2 themed barbecue that weekend!

Heh, I was one of those 60. That was a bit of a brisk line!

Hells yes we were!

I think the line started around midnight... I have no idea what I am doing this time around. Things are much different and I have a husband that wants to go to a show but does not feel like spending too much time in line, and knowing me and my stupid line nazi ways, he has to put in the time with me or not at all. Doubt we will camp, so probably just get there early morning. :hmm:

this is good advice. I fly in for Cubs games every year or 2 and stay out by O'Hare. Use the trains and bus lines - no need for a car. and no need for a designated driver!

I have always wanted to go to Chicago so I am thinking of going out there by myself. Nobody else wants to "travel" to see U2, but I don't mind :)

Now I have to price some hotels, airfare and get an idea of what it would cost.

Midnight sounds about right.

This may or may not be my only GA this tour :)lol: yeah, right!) so knowing me, I'll be in line Thursday.

We weren't allowed to line up that early in Cleveland or something I thought. All I remember is we got there at 4, and were 40th or something in line. A little Brisk? HAHA!

I honestly think it is the only GA I'll attempt. I just don't feel like it for Dallas.

We weren't allowed to line up in the property, so the line started on the public sidewalk within view of where the line would eventually form. At 6:00 AM security from the venue came and escorted us onto the property. They were quite lovely actually, they even gave us the phone number for security in case there were any issues.

We lined up across the street - we weren't allowed to line up that early on the arena property, if I recall correctly.

Railskank powers, activate!

I considered going to this show, but in the end I think I'd prefer not to travel to see U2 on the first leg and instead go on vacation this summer elsewhere.

Ok, I kinda remember this now. That was a crazy day, so not all of it is there.

Yep... got in line around 3 or 3:30am in Cleveland... right after they moved across the street I suppose. IIRC, I was around # 26 or so. Dam, that was a cold, cold day/night!!!!!

I'm guessing things will start a little earlier, especially if the weather is ok.

Personally, I think around midnight is a good time to start a line. Any earlier seems like such a waste... At midnight you can settle in, talk to people for a bit and then try to get some rest. The earliest I ever got into line was at 10:00 PM in Hawaii, the day before the show, but considering people started to line up 2 days before.... :crack:

lining up for this tour will be different (I hope)

1. Large stage (that sucker has got to be huge)
2. 360 design lets more people be on the rail

plus people in Hawaii lined up for days prior to the show and those who got there around mid morning still got a decent view

whereas 40-60 people ahead of you for arena shows was disaster I think stadium shows can accommodate much more
