Excellent group Martha. I belong to that group. They have excellent educational aids for teaching racial tolerance in schools.

That said, I'd have to give mine to Heifer International. It is amazing what one goat or sheep, or ect. can do for a family.

(I'd like to split it to a Aids org. also, but that would be cheating)

Based in Montgomery, Alabama, under the direction of attorney Morris Dees.

The first charity that came to my mind is about 45 minutes west of the Southern Poverty Law Center: The United Methodist Children's Home for Alabama/West Florida, in Selma, Alabama; I would possibly split it between that local children's home and Children's Hope Chest, which gives aid to orphaned children in Rumania and former Soviet republics. My wife visited some of the kids last summer.

Having grown up on a dairy goat farm......and sent many a goat on their way to Heifer, I would agree...it is an excellent idea!

I wouldn't give the money to a really big 'cause' (like WWF) because it would be a drop on a hot plate anyway. I think I would give mine my to the Aqualutra park in Leeuwarden. They research the behaviour of the Otter-population in The Netherlands in relation to environmental damages. It'd probably triple their budget.

All that said, I have no idea where to donate...I wish Bono would pick one he trusts and tell us.
I would also want to donate it to help Africa, and have no idea where to donate the money to insure that is best spent.

Probably start some kind of Drug Addiction clinic, similar to Alcoholics Anonymous. Maybe.

Besides the Africa/AIDS charities that I like, there's one that hasn't been mentioned yet: the Dave Thomas Foundation that offers assistance to families who want to adopt older children. There are so many older children who desperately need loving families--and there are families who would love to have them.

Locally, I would create a scholarship fund in my grandfather's name at a learning center in my hometown. They're based out of a housing project, and the kids who live there go to the learning center for tutoring, after-school activities, sports, life-skills clubs, etc. A lot of the kids won't ever be able to afford college, but they're bright and they work hard, which is how my grandfather was. The scholarships would be awarded on the basis of performance in school (not so much grades, but diligence and citizenship), extracurricular activities, and ambition to succeed.
