What is it about Poker?

OK here it is, I was trying to organize a Texas Hold'em Tournament to raise money for charity. It is illegal to do this in Massachusetts.

Why?

Vegas Nights are legal with NO POKER.

BINGO is legal in the sanctuary of the local Catholic Church.

What is it that offends people about cards? Can someone help me understand?

Try playing "Massachusetts" hold'em and see if that changes things.

Honestly I don't know, I'm sure it goes back to an old school religious thing. I guess bingo is safer than gambling.

I should look into this further, but there are different forms of gambling from a legal perspective - lottery type games, games of chance, etc.

It likely depend on who the odds favor, the participants ability to control the outcome and the relationship between the "house" and the participants.

Unlike Bingo or other traditional casino table games, Texas Hold 'Em pits players against each other, not against "the house".

Perhaps you could do this if participants made a donation, played for chips and the person with the most chips won a prize.

This is the way we were going to run it.

$50.00 donation got you your chips, with buy ins during the hour to get more chips.
