I think Christian apocalypticism and historicism are effectively poisoning our culture. The world is not ending.

And I find it doubtful that computers will ever be banned. While the goal of technology up to the 21st century was to give us expanded freedom to do what we want, the goal of technology since then has been to control what we can or cannot do. In the end, we'll be incapable of doing anything illegal, because the NX (no-execute) chips and DRM will not allow it.

Plus, any super PC will always be overshadowed by exponentially more powerful government computers that have all the encryption keys and full availability to snoop on you. Why would they want to cut off an easy form of domestic and international espionage?

There are an aweful lot of people, who, I've spoken with and they really don't believe the human race can progress much farther.

I am dissapointed in those people. I undersand them, but....... I don't think they see how much potential we have. Damn straight - we have to work out a lot of things. But I say it's better to try than not to. Even if our race won't last forever.......

Kind of like "well jeez, if I'm gonna die, why bother?"

Don't just give up

It's a very narrow-minded view, that's for sure. I look at the world and I see a world that has a lot to improve on, both from a technological POV and infrastructure POV. By the year 2100, I'm confident that the current present will be as embarrassing as the year 1900 is for us.

I am less concerned about the potential for mass destruction by weapons

and I don't give much credit to religious predictions about the end times

i do believe human arrogance can wipe out humanity
or a very large portion of the planets population

it will not happen in my life time.
but, there are tipping points

as this huge ocean liner (the earth) keeps chugging along, many believe we are unsinkable

losing the ozone and the magnetic field that deflects solar flares is possible

the oceans are not being protected, changes in temperatures, the very chemistry? in the ocean is changing, at what point is the oceans food chain disrupted?

this may be a poor comparison
but, read reports of the American West
the early settlers on trains, shot the Bison for sport
The herds covered the plains for days like oceans,
they never believed they could have any impact on the population,
the Bison had been here for thousands of years coexisting with the Indians

well, in a few decades the bison herds disappeared.
