Yes but Italy under Berlusconi has reformed many of its laws which make it better for business and capitalism. No, the socialist and the communist are not happy with this, but its important for Italy to make these reforms.

I can't say I know the whole picture. But I think most Italians knew Berlusconi prior to electing him recently. They knew about his "black spots" but elected him as their president. We should pay more attention to Italian voters point of view as well.

They know a image of him which is produced by his media. He controls almost all tv stations and all big newspapers!

In "Die Zeit" there was an article that 3/4 of all lawchanges Berlusconi did were just to stop law-suites against him

So it looks to me more like he abuses his political power to get more financial power, protect himself and his corrupt friends - then he uses his media domination to get more (or stabilize) political power.

As someone who believes in Democracy this concerns me seriousely.

Anyone who wants to sign a petition against this man:

The European Union is founded on the principles of democracy and it is within the interests of the Union to ensure that these principles are followed by the individual member states. Italy has seriously violated these principles by allowing the current Prime Minister to control 90% of the television airwaves, thus failing to ensure the media pluralism, necessary for a functioning democracy. This persistent violation by Italy threatens the stability of the Union and is a concern to all the citizens therein. Therefore we the undersigned, petition the European Parliament to compel Italy to comply with the values of the European Union.

I am in Italy right now... and can attest that Berlusconi sucks as a business leader... He is, for sure, leaving office, after this mandate is over and even probably going to jain, after this so-called "immunity" he just passed expires...

Pathetic, this guy makes me feel ashamed of my Italian origins.

I am not European or of Italian extraction or whatever but if I were, with what I've heard from my in-laws in Italy, I'd sign the thing immediately.
